because they are a link to prehistoric times its like if you could own your own dinosaur and not worry about getting eaten by it, wouldn't u like to have a t-rex or a velaso rapture as a pet, only problem would be would be that you could turn into lunch. thats my kick plus the look great to me "flying" around in the tank and especially watching them hunt live prey , buts thats my two cents worth! HOLLA

They're definitely one of my favorites. I think it's the way they swim and interact with each other. They just kind of bump into each other and lay next to each other sometimes. And they eat like snakes.
If you want to see some cool stuff, toss in a handful or rosies.

Yep. Look like crosses between snakes and crocs... I love feeding time, I love how hardy they are, but most of all, the big ticket for me is watching them grow over time.

LOL, I guess most of the Polypterus addicts find them appealing for the same reasons.
I was a reptile enthusiast long before I got into fish. I keep WAY more fish than herps now, but my Polypterus are the best of both worlds. They're alot more reptilian than fish-like in appearance and behavior. Even thier territorial skirmishes are very similar to lizards.
A massive tank full of large Polypterus is like keeping a community of fully aquatic reptiles. Awsome fish, I have so many and am ALWAYS looking for more.
