'cos they are majestic and have a certain primeval beauty about them. they are graceful, but they can be vicious (not all the time). they are not difficult to keep as long as you have enough tank space and can provide them the right food.

can i humbly suggest jack black?
LIke their faces, they remind me of dogs. their chilled out and have their social system, their devious stealing from eachother and the pleco especially. Hearty and interactive, can handfeed, personable but best of all surprisingly dangerous to feeders. Badasses.
my reasons...
they are very hardy.
they hunt verrrry efficiently. (bichir: "...eyesight who?")
they're not 'angry fishes'.
they are cute lil dino's (prehistoric and reptile-like)
exotic... not evry one likes them (which makes me like them even more!)

The prehistoric factor is just gravy to me, I love their general temperment and personality. I love watching them swim more than any other fish, they remind me of dragons. They're just charming little fellas, gotta be my favorite character in my tank. Oh and I can't wait till Tical is big enough to hunt down some feeders even though watching him stalk ghost shrimp is fun too.
I believe people who keep bichirs are a certain type of keeper, where personality ranks over the esthetic appeal of other fish. The mystique of having a fish that's ancient predator over a fish that is bright blue.
i actually find them aesthetically very appealing 
with that primitive/oddball look...thats one of the reasons i like them so much...on the other hand, personality is not a big thing for me. in any case they are very interesting fish in all aspects.

They are so cool to me because they remind me of a dog with a bone .. they chew it and throw it and look for it... then they stand up on their fins and beg you to throw in another one.. they are adorable.."gotta love them".
