Can someone tell me why are bichirs so expensive? Most bichirs I've seen that is 6" and up is $35 or more. Are Endi Bichir rare because I see the asking price is $100 or more for one?

not rare at all, just in general with large "monster fish", the price tags can seem a bit much for most people, i've come to realize that's not bad at all.

I guess its because they are difficult to breed while having that high demand, even here in my place endlis are expensive

Difficulty to breed=Hard to increase the supply
Low supply and high demand=This commands high price.

Simple.;)

petsmart has senegals for 6$

Thanks for all the replies guys. I can now get a better idea why bichirs cost so much. As a bichir newbie I guess I got lucky when I picked up a perfect finage 7" bichir from a private seller for $35. It was because of this experience I thought bichirs should only be under the $50 range.

Currently farm raised species include
Polypterus delhezi
Polypterus palmas polli
Polypterus ornatipinnis
Polypterus endlicheri endlicheri (normal and shortbody)
Polypterus senegalus normal coloration and albino variation also longfin and shortbody
Other species are wild caught so there is overhead to be considered
prices can also vary depending on the size of the (shipping and handling)
fish also the location it has to go to.Rarity in the hobby also effects price
