Where I'm at it was the Petco that caused the two small local shops to close. I've heard rumors we might get a Petsmart and I hope it's true.
Since Petco is our only pet store, they (even admit) jack prices up, and Petsmart has a much cleaned and better fish setup from the ones I've been to and seen.

A couple of our local Pet stores were bought out by Petco. It's funny that I can get stuff cheaper using Petco online than the Petco stores themselves and they don't price match their own online price either!

Most are still open in my area but the best one did close down. They just spent alot of money to relocate, then the owner of the building sold the building and the new owner told them they had to leave. They couldn't afford another move so they closed down.

One thing that's kind of odd about the lfs scene here is the crappiest store here is a little mom and pop joint that's been around for years and has always left quite a bit to be desired but it shoes no sign of closing down.

The few stores that remain are quite good, though some of the LFS that shut down had owners who were complete dicks and I can say good riddance to some, but there are a few I miss.

There were 7,626 Pet and Pet Supply Stores in the US in 2002. 8,813 in 2012, a growth of 16%.
There were 187 Pet and Pet Supply Stores in Georgia in 2002. 195 in 2012.
There were 23 Pet and Pet Supply Stores in Atlanta in 2002. 21 in 2012.

Per the US Census Bureau.

Now 21 is certainly less than 23, but it's nothing like zero.

Just looked 1 minute ago and there are 5 Petsmarts and 3 Petcos just in Atlanta. Are those 21 stores the US Census reported refusing to sell fish or are they "reef only" stores?
