IN A PLACE
I'm not a FH person and know little about them. Can you guys enlighten me? Why are they so pricey? Why are they considered lucky? What is the most $$$ anyone actually spent on these beasts? What is the difference between ZZ, midas, kok, etc? They have some neat coloration and some personality for sure. C'mon people, show me the way!

I don't know that much about them either as I'm fairly new to FHs also, but the kok is the hump that they get on their head and the bigger it is, usually the more expensive they are. The price also varies depending on their pearls also, the little shiny spots that they have on their scales. I've seen a 12" Big Head for $999 at my lfs. They are bred w/ many different fish and it also depends on where they come from, I believe, I might be wrong about that though...

try breeding pretty flowerhorns and ull se why it is so expensive. if u have masterpieces worth around 1000 and u breed them out of 1000 fish 1 will be worth 1000. 990 will be worth only one dollar because the majority of the babies look like crap, and 8 percent will be worth like 100

on top of that the more expensive strains superredtexas, kamfa and such are 99.9 percent sterile so making more is kind of hard

and that is why they are so expensive,
u have line breed to come out with good fish

Sorry, I forgot about the whole sterile thing. I've read that many a times, just forgot about it. But yes, a lot of SRTs and Kamfas are sterile...

yea it sad :(
one of my fav fh was a kamfa and was infertile as a mofo
never got to make one of my own

if u want to breed kamfa its easy thoguh, just mix and normal flowerhorn <like zz> with kingkong parrot

I have some fhs. I dont if are sterile.I have 1 female fh that I know is not sterile.Because she laid eggd before. She is only like 3-3and a half in..Her mate beat her up and ate the eggs.So i separated them.I don know if the others are sterile yet, prpobubly not, even though they are crossed between 2 diffrent fhs.

Because Asians like myself find symbolic qualities about them. Certain 'flowers' the large black spots, resemble characters in Asian language.

^^ look at other thing

Depends how much the fish means to u.

ZZ - is a color variety
midas - is a wild form of red devil
kok - is the knot on the head of the fish

I can post pics later

only high quality command a high price for fh's specially one's with big kok's nice fineage and pearls....lucky hmmm they say the bigger the kok the luckier you can get or the one's that got flowers some say they resemble chinese characters with certain meaning but did you know that before the flowerhorn aisan aros specially the gold one's and red one's where the one's considered to be lucky that's one reason they became expensive too.

great information everyone. i had a 12" red devil once and it was more like a family dog than a fish: great personality! So I understand why they are lucky but would you become unlucky if your FH dies?
