why are my dats scared?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Datnoids are stalkers by nature. They hide and ambush their prey. Therefore if there is no hiding places or dark spots their bars become unstable and darken in body color. Try leaving the lights on more often and for longer periods of time. They will eventually become comfortable with their environment and have beautiful stable bars and color.

People use this approach as well as the total opposite approach, where people will remove all hiding places so the fish will be out in the open. Try both and see what works for you. YMMV ;)

yeah i'm trying the light thing and leaving it on for some time. i already did the removing of all the things but they just hide behind the heater.

ya got a tv in the room. seriously, my ngt didnt come out for 4-5 months. attack and chase food but never freely swim around. As I started watching more tv at night in the room, it came to that side of the tank, happily in the open. Bloodworms was its popcorn LOL. The Silver still hides though, guess it doesnt like tv as much...

get some fake bamboo leaves and tie em to rocks. that helped one person I know.

I've had luck with adding (I'm ashamed to say this on MFK) Platys. The Platys tend to draw the dats out during their feeding frenzy.

The dats began to assocaite me with food and now as soon as I walk into the room I see 8 dats come screaming out of the plants and other hidespots begging at the front of the tank.

I also used the light method to acclimate them to the tank light. At first they would bolt as soon as that light came on, but they are doing much better now. I exposed my tank to very long photo periods. I wake up at 5:45am, turn the light on and then turn it off when I go to bed.

i'll try to leave the lights on for long periods of time and hopefully that it works and they get used to it.

I got a couple of tiny indos who dash to the front of the tank lookin for food. After filling up, they swim around but before that, they're hiding.
The 5" thin bar used to hide all the time but then realized that the other fish would get all the food if it doesn't get to it first. so now it also roam the front of the tank
