  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
because they are small...

Like Jason of Friday the 13th.. When he was little kids picked on him. Then he grew up into a monster and killed everyone.

:ROFL:Yes and he did it again, and again, and again.....

JDs max out at a fraction of the Doviis in weight.. So at that size, the doviis are like little toddlers.. They arent really what they are right now.. If you keep them in the same tank, the Doviis will grow up and kill the JD for suuuuuuuure..

So at this stage, I think everything is normal. Maybe next week, it'll be the other way around.

That guy scared the crap out of me when I was little. Now I grew up to know it was only a movie.

I also witnessed my roommate's smallest fish in the tank grew up and took out all the tank mates..

Guess what fish was that little guy..

A Dovii

Sorry to hear about your Butti dying three months ago. You still mention another Butti possibly going into your final set up. Are you going to buy another juvenile andgrow it out or are you going to add an adult Butti to your mix? Your wish for an aggressive tank may happen if you do add one.

well, I dont really keep cichlids for their aggressive nature I keep them because of their personality's. I do have a 200 gallon tank in my basement for the dovii's,dempsey, and I will be getting a 3 inch butti to raise him with the dovii. I miss the little striped hornet tilapia, one smart fish. I'm not sure about how the dovii's will kill the dempsey in a week or two lol. but in a year I will keep and eye on him for sure.

I think the cichlid's personality is or from their aggressive nature..

If they weren't aggressive, they wouldnt have much personality.

True but, I think their just smart amasing animals that I am a fond of.

No doubt a full grown dovii may not face competition. I hate how poeple always jump to adult sizes of fish. The fish first has to survive to even grow that big. This JD may very well kill them before they even become adults.

Good point, well instead I bought a male jaguar(4 inch) he's a bit bigger then them but the larger more colorful male dovii tore him up! Then I took the jag back and bought a 2 inch midas at petsmart and the midas rules. It's funny because the midas is barely an inch can't even bite or lip lock.

It is not about size or power with Cichlids it seems to be more about confidence - I have seen little tiny cichlids that wouldnt even be capable of jaw locking another cichlid but have been chasing others much much bigger than them.

9/10 a Dovii will be to much for a JD but you never know - your JD may retain its early confidence and always be dominant over the Dovii. It could happen you never know, in theory it won't happen but there is always a chance.

It really is to do with confidence - look at breeding pairs how aggressive they become when protecting their fry. My pair of JD's would easily be able to drive off an RD with that kind of aggression - brought about by adrenaline and confidence. But normally they would just lack confidence in doing that.
