Why are my fish dying!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had something similar happen to my stock a few months back. I wasnt running enough filtration. I had 2 hot mags on my 100g. I think you are running 1 AC110 on your 100g?

If that is all you are running. I would grab a pump and a sponge filter until you can afford to get more filtration. I think your stock needs more bacteria colony and lots of aeration. You can get a nice air pump with dual outputs, 1 for the sponge filter and 1 for an air stone.

When I had my 2 hot mags on my 100g, fish kept dying off. I added 2 pumps and voila... My $0.02...

Good luck and keep us all posted!

Thank you. I'll see if I can just throw together a DIY sponge filter, it's what I have running in my shrimp tank.

good to hear your water was OK, and going by the pics, the fish weren't in great shape when you got them. the first pic has a split tail (keep an eye on it for infection) and the second looks starved, it wouldn't surprise me if the second one was a year older than the first. I'd also guess they are wild caught.

I wouldn't feed so much though, twice a day is plenty, a fish can easily grow 6 inches in a year on being fed 2 times a day. and too much after a period of too little can cause problems too. that's why they give starvation victims (people, dogs, cats, etc...) only very small amounts at first.
salmon is great for your fish, but will really dirty up the tank. omega one cichlid pellets has whole salmon meal as it's first ingredient, and all my fish love it. I'd go with that instead of fresh fillets.

Thanks, good to know!

I have a little side question, didn't really want to start a new thread.

Would it be safe to add a ~2" Raphael to that tank? I have him in my 35 gallon as a grow out tank, but I am completely changing my stock, and don't think that Angelfish would appreciate a Raphael in their territory. Do you think it'd be OK to put him in there at this size?

No. But one of the things that's very high up on my list of things to buy is a good powerhead.

I had the same problem with my monster tank my arrow was getting gill curl and my other fish were a little lethargic. Someone on the forums advised me to purchase a power head for circulation and the issues were fixed. You should try it! Its an cheap and easy fix!

do angels sink to the bottom when they sleep? and are they small enough for the body to fit in it's mouth? the raph won't let the fins get in the way.
if they stay up in the water column or are too big for the raph to eat you should be fine. I've had a few raphaels and they would only feed off the bottom.

sardines have thiaminase, which is a B vitamin inhibitor that will likely cause health problems if it composes more than about 20% of the diet.

Sorry didnt see you post till now, but to answer your question, honestly im not sure about sardines, since i've never heard of any ones experience in using them as a feeder tbh...

Lol! I'm not using them as live feeders...I have frozen sardines that I bought for my dog.

Problem is that the Raphael would probably love to make a snack out of Angel eggs/babies! I was thinking of putting him in my 100 before the Bichirs/other fish get too big to call him a snack? That is where I was planning on putting him eventually
