Why Are MY RBP's So Jumpy?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
"anyone else have problems with 19 rbps in a 46?"

whats wrong with that, thats almost 2.5 gallons per fish.

haha, i know its small and i plan on upgrading them to a 350 gallon rubbermaid asap. i've had rbps 5-6 other times and never had aggression like this, i'm thinking it could be possible they are another species, becuase they also seem a bit more robust. i will check out the id sticky.
and if pics are wanted i'll post.
thanks for the comments guys!

I have 2-15gal longs with 45-50 1/2"-1" in eack 1 my fry aren't skittish neither are the parents both come to glass when I'm there.both will eat out of my hand.although hand feeding the parents is rare.

You said you'd post pics n since nobody is askn. I wanna see some pics!try being real calm around them reach for stuff slow, open lid slow ect.don't make fast sudden movements see if that helps any.try to sit by em a while everyday they'll calm down.lower temp down a couple degrees they'll chill out! i've heard these rubbermaids mentioned quite a few times, what are they? any link?

cooling the temp a couple degrees to like 78-79 will lower there metabolism chilling them out a lil i guess but not sure.. all i know for sure is that the best option is to turn off the lights and provide plenty of cover with plants and hardscaping. also heavy foot traffic vibrates throught the tank and water spooking fish

I have 3 6-7" RBP's in an 85 gallon tank and even though they are in our living room, they still dart when anyone comes to the glass. They also avoid whatever side of the tank I lift the lid for when it's feeding time. It took almost 3 months for them to even eat in front of us.

I don't think there is anything wrong with them, though you will need more space and they fact that they already have killed off some of their number is a clue. When my red bellies were in a 55 gallon they were much more aggressive towards one another. Lots of big fin nips were inflicted. I think they really like to have their space individually sometimes. Mine seem to have their particular spots they like to sleep in and if another fish ventures too close, that is when the chasing will start. It rarely happens now but it ALWAYS happened in my 55.
