Why are Payara so hard to raise past 10 inches?

$50 a week seems super high for 3 small Payara's. I barley eat that much myself!

Have you ever considered gut loading the feeders prior to feeding them? I have a 20gal set aside where I feed my feeders heavily with some enchanced beefheart, then I feed them to my fish. I am getting 7 Payara's for my 480 today and hope this will give me some success.

i was kinda thinking that too. even going as far as getting a needle and shooting vitamins into the feeder right before you throw it in the tank.

Maybe if you didn't feed $1 a piece feeders like danios and white clouds you might save some money just a thought... my 3 peacock bass babies only do about $15-$20 damage a week worth of rosy reds and gold fish so I think you should be able to save about half your cash at least if you changed to those instead of expensive feeders. I realize they aren't as healthy as the danios and such but its worth a shot, thats to much to be spending when they are that small ~Trent

Woodysun-taiwan (the guy who everyone has been talking about) has a 16" payara, one of the biggest in Taiwan/captivity. He mentioned that the payara is fed on a diet of loaches, which are much healthier than the standard feeder goldfish. BOTR may be trying to feed a higher quality feeder to grow his payara past the dreaded 12" mark. I personally feel that woodysun's diet has been a major contributor to the enormous size of his payara, so I have tried to replicate this healthier diet too. The typical American feeders are of lesser quality, so some people may spend the extra money to provide some more natural/healthy feeders to their payara.

Wow that sound so great 7 for a 480! How big are they? Would love to see some pics and video of that tank bro! your friend Howie

Just got my 7 in yesterday... They are small now, only about 4-5 inches each. The Tank is being constructed as we speak, give me 5 weeks and I'll have water in it, 8 weeks till I plan on adding stock fish to it. Trust me, there will be pics!

that sounds great bro, by the way how much did you pay for a pack of 7! I have been trying to get some larger ones and the ones available are very expensive! keep in touch man and great tank and fish your friend Howie

I got them at a great price. Just under $200. Unfortunatly I lost 2 over the weekend. This is to be expected though, they were basicaly shipped directly to me through the LFS. No quarenteen at the shop.

Sounds like a nice group of payara. What are the dimensions of the tank you are building?
