it's a state to state thing. Alot of people single out cali but there's alot of neighboring states with similar weather pattern that are on opposite ends of the spectrum (look at washington and oregon for example, legal in or, banned in wa, wa is further north, bordering canada). It's also bigger then piranhas (rays, arowanas, etc etc).

All in the local legislation and laws that were made years ago and probably never looked at again.

Kind of funny that I live in Tacoma and can drive 2 hours to Portland and see piranha for sale in the pet stores there. There is a large sign posted on the freeway from Oregon to Washington stating something about transporting certain species... blah, blah, blah...

So I guess I will just have to move!

A to Z pets is the best source for piranhas in portland. You can see them in every size in multiple tanks including occasional rhoms, elong and some massive ternz that have been there a few years.

I only have pictures on my phone but i do happen to be going to portland this weekend. I'll see if i can stop by and snap some. Their size is impressive but the chimple has always tarnished the beauty of these 4

I can actually add something on this... I know that it gets too cold to survive for piranha, but I am up here in Michigan where pacu's are living in the Detroit river...

During the winter they school in the warm waters outside of the power plants, my cousin actually caught one last summer and was calling me to see what it was...

So any water that has a decent size power plant may produce warm enough water all year to sustain almost any tropical fish... I know around here the water is a minimum of 75-80 degrees in the immediate area around the plants

I'm pretty sure thats where my fish came from orignally.

When I was little there was a rumor that a local small pond had piranha in it but I think that was just made up to keep people from swimming in it.
I guess I can't blame the people who sit behind their desks and make up these laws for it. If you asked me a year ago if people should keep piranha as pets I would of laughed and said the keepers were idiots. Now I know im more likely to get mauled by my housecat.

ok that is really cool! they are like a giant tropical grass carp. Is there any sign of negative effect of these fish living in this waterway. and where was this powerplant? what time of year? what bait? sorry about all the fishing questions, but i am a fisherman after all:drool:
