why are piranhas illegal and pacu aint?

P's just have a very bad reputation. They're like football hooligans. In groups they can be dangerous but alone they're whimps. People who find out i like predatory fish always ask "Why don't you get piranha's?" IME piranha's aren't nearly as aggressive as other fish i've kept like giant snakeheads. It's mostly the gore factor that gives people the heebie jeebies

that would be such a kick ass game fish!!!! i had 2 in my 220.. when it came time to relocate to a indoor pond they were 26"L and 24"L needless to say my net looked like a pretzel with a little bit of torn green material left... i love pacu.. as for the question... in my opion pacu are pretty dangerous as well , those jaws have done damage to me before but for why piranha are illegal, over-protective mothers...over-protective mothers... and like red devil said "look at that face.."

in the old tank i had i had 3 rbs and a pacu and the pacu was more agressive than the rbs and ate way more feeders

Pacus do have a very very hearty appetite.. and if they are raised and offerered feeders they will definitly adapt to eating anything they can fit in their mouth.. but mine were only fed frozen silversides and vegetables, from when they were small i had a red tail shark live with them.. the little 4 inch red tail used the pacus as protection.. the red tail passed away of old age.. so 6 months ago i added an african cichlid to the pacu tank.. same thing.. they love that cichlid and cichlid never looked so good and so happy:grinno: So to me the pacus have only proven to be gentle giants....

They are illegal in California (which sucks for me) because of fear that they will be released into the wild. That's dumb; they might as well ban any other fish that can damage it's environment if released, like goldfish.

People hear there's a "maneater" in their local swimming hole...they freak and call the government to intercede.

People hear there's a fruit eater in their local swimming hole, they say; "ain't that cute".

This was I believe if I read correctly the main reason.. I think we owe it to Teddy R. :D

@Liz

your pacu look like a profi-boxer after 10 K.O. in a row :D ;)

only joking - i like them too :naughty:

PACUS are vegetarn's, Piranhas arnt, if Piranhas, got lose in a local river or lake they could eat loacal fish and throw off the local balance, i really dont see a problem with them biting people, they dont in the amazon, but then again theres a endless supply of food for them there , what if they eat every local fish, and were in the lake or stream, with no food, and people went swiming, i wouldnt want to be the unaware swimmer!!
