Why are Snakeheads illegal in the States?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the populations of c.argus are thought to be releases related to the live fish food market.someone owned up to the initial crofton pond find , he was going to make a channa soup for his ill relative and when she got better he decided to release them into the wild. it wasnt done with any real thought and i dont belive he knew what trouble it would cause. he was not prosicuted as the time passed from there release to there find was over the limitation for prosicution
the population in the protomac are unrelated to the ones found in crofton pond
it is not know how the florida marulia and micropeltes populations have come about , it is likley to be either from the live fish food market or by release from hobbists. but no proof for either exsists
they have a blanket ban because of all the hype they received after the croften find , as we all know there are many big and preditory fish to be found in the us esp. florida and not all are banned, redtailed cats have been released and will more than likley eat far more than a micro.
there is not proof to what damage snakeheads have caused or may cause in the future , in other countries where argus has been introduce they have not wiped out all native stock , only time and propper studdies will show us the true effect that theese fish will have on the us eco-systems.
maybe in time they will be removed from a full ban ,but for them forseeable future the ban is not going anywhere.

jd7.62 . i will try and write something up explaining it a bit better during the week and get it stickied as it is comming up more and more latley.

cheers col

People really suck. That said I live in the desert lol They shouldnt be illeagal in Phoenix Az, Im pretty sure that every damn lake we have here is man made or only full of water because we keep pumping water into it thus we really have no fish native to AZ:)

one time i was bored so i looked up native fish in az.

there are only 3 native species of arizonian fish that still exist

apache trout, desert sucker, and another type of fish.

bass, sunfish, trout (besides apache), catfish, etc. are all non native :ROFL:

i agree with you, or they should make a pond some where with just snakeheads and have people fish for them and also have the Game and Fish Dept. surrounding the pond so everyone has to release their catch back into the pond:ROFL::ROFL::D

I don't think it really matters how. Obviuosly someone had released them at some point. Sticky or no sticky. Tell me what an SH could do that a common wolf could not in the southern states or what many other species for that matter could do.. Why do I have to keep all my Ps and Wolf up north? Yet I am keep an Armatus. Try and tell me that an Armatus could not reak havoc in the south. Yes I do belive the Armatus could adapt to the southern states. I realize Snakes are low O2 and can survive much lower temps. My point is that some species get a worse wrap than others. I think it is all pollitical BS. I just caught another snake head in the glades. They are all over down here. SO not allowing me to keep one in the aquarium helps the environment in what way? I would think it would be better off with me in my home than in the wild. Obviouly they are breeding. If they were that much of a threat I would think more measures would be taken to help control them. I am frequenting the glades pretty often and I can tell you not many measures are being taken. I actually am still in the process of trying to get a non profit organization together to help rid then in the wild here in S. Florida. I can tell you it is not much concern from day to day life. People speak of them as monsters yet noone is really doing anything to get rid of them. Sorry this post is more venting than it is informative and I know I gave poor examples of comparison. I am just upset with the US when it comes to the control of Snakes...

Nope.

Nope.

Can we get a sticky on this?

For the last Effin time, the breeding populations of channa in the US is NOT the direct result of release by hobbyists!!!

I dont see anyone mentioned hobbyists, just people.
