i have been told this [lfs folklore] that the oscer is named after a fighter also jack dempsy a famous boxer for the cichlid jd but i do not know of a famous fighter named oscer do any of u?

Not sure of the origin of the genus, but auratus means gold.

That's not true...when Oscars were originally described, they were described as Lobotes ocellatus in the 1830's by Baron de Cuvier.

The scientific description changed a few times until it finally ended at Astronotus ocellatus.
