Why are we still keeping fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Beautiful, fun, and great show piece!

-It's good to see a piece of nature inside the house,
-what's more it has less maintenance than owning a dog(for me),
-you could be an artist via aqua-scaping,
-a huge wow for visitors,
-a commendable hobby which requires formidable commitment,
-a huge steam off from stress,
-I just love fish, whether it's plate or tanks, I do love fish...

That's one of the biggest reasons for me, I love nature. Fishkeeping is a hobby that was handed down to me and that I grew up learning. It's just like any other hobby, you invest your time and money into it because its something that you enjoy and feel like it will pay off in some sort of way.

been keeping fish since 1959, they probably were the last straw that contributed to my divorce, and my house with probably need to be torn down in the end.
Why would i stop now?

Mods: this is not any attempt to gain posts. If it needs to be moved, please put it where it should be.
Thank you!

Anyway, I have a question to pose to all the people of MFK.
Why are you still keeping fish?
It's expensive.
Water changes are another thing to add to my schedule.
There's no way to make money doing it.
Ordinary people (non-fishkeepers) can't find any good reason whatsoever to do what they see us do for our fish. Quite frankly, I can't even see a good reason to stay in the hobby.
Only 4 of the fish I own have any real personality worth mentioning.
But I LOVE keeping fish. There's something so satisfying about a clean piece of a river/ocean in my home that just makes me... Happy.
Anybody feel the same way?

you are going about it all wrong!!

It does not have to be expensive ..I have over 20 tanks up and running I have paid very little for them and the filtration you just have to know where to find cheap or free tanks,
I make my own foods, I improvise on filter floss ( waste of money to buy from the store)
And there is a way to make money off of it!! in fact my entire hobby is now paying for its self buy breeding and selling fish to a few of my LFS i barely spend anything on it..the electrical bill and water bill are negotiable with how I have everything set up.

I love nature and having a chunks of it sitting around my house makes me feel great..I love getting my hands in the tanks!.

water changes are pretty easy even with all my tanks, with a python water changer it takes me an hour tops.

Its enjoyable
I don't care what other people think
and I simply love watching the fish move ( the ones with and with out personalities)
Its not always about personality by the way!!..for me its about creating an environment close enough to the wild one they came out of to be able to observe natural behaviors..mmm love nature.

Every one of those points are so

1. So? A water change takes 15 minutes tops. I doubt your THAT busy.
2. No way in making money keeping fish? What???
3. Quite frankly, I don't see a good reason to go put up a tent and poop in the woods and pretend I'm a caveman when I already pay for a house to LIVE in...
and lastly,
Personality is what you make it, my dog doesn't have a personality worth mentioning either.

1.)Water changes going through all my tanks (along with a thorough cleaning of each one) takes me about an hour and a half.
2.)Sure, some fish stores can make money. It's rare for a hobbyist to ever get back the money spent on said hobby.
3.) I don't either lol
4.) Don't have much to say to that
ANYWAY, I love keeping fish and I'm sure ill continue for some time to come. I just like reminding myself once in a while that either I'm not crazy, or there are other people like me who are even crazier than me about fish.
Mostly the latter but hey, everybody is only normal to themselves.

It is a passion that burns deep inside of me, and always has. It is a connection to my father, who taught me to joys of fishing and fish keeping, and it is a calming salve towards he everyday realities of life. Water changes I enjoy. And fellowship on sites like this one, that's the payoff as well.

It's like any hobby, if you don't truly love it at its core, why would you do it?

By the way, if you are in a hobby only or mostly for the money, then that's a job and not a hobby

There's no way I'm in this hobby for money. All I'm saying is that since all I breed is angels, the hobby not even close to paying for itself. I'm not breeding any real monsters.
I have two 75 gallons, a 55, a 29 that I cycle 3 different angel pairs through, and a 10 that's currently empty of stock. I don't have space at the current time for any real monsters. I've tried many times to make space but to no avail.
I always thought this site was called monster fishkeepers for the monster dedication we all have for our fish. Obviously the monster size of some of the fish comes into play as well, but you get what I mean.
