Why can't tigers be bred ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I remember the days when John Rare was selling ST for $25 a pop!!!! and leo's were $200. Eventually most fish will go down this road as well.

Once the Supply of IT runs out in the wild, the price will sky rocket and some of us will kick ourselves for not stocking them.

Once again, it is us humans that are destroying them to extinction in the wild and captive breeding seems impossible at this point.

Who would actually be nice enough to captive breed them and releasing them to the wild? No one i bet. Its all about $/profit. Even if they did, it would have to be a massive scale. And Whats the point if people are going to fish them and sell them?
Slowly the IT will be in the same boat as ST. Theres no proof that these species are being captive breed. St along with IT will be in extinction in a couple decades

Like banning them and putting restrictions help? It will only make demand higher and drive up prices and create black market. Just a sad world

Indo's are Absolutely being bred in captivity. I don't believe there is enough concern to breed ST's. They eat them, why would they care to breed them?

With the massive of amounts of baby indos we see in stock in Lfs, i first believe that theres captive breeding but theres no proof or evidence of that. Heck, we cant even figure out the sex of them.

Assume the indos are being breed, there should be a flood of baby STs in the lfs.

Can we get back on track ?

I know LOTS of you have Datnoids - but, do any of you have a long-term group? Let's hear from you, and any potential breeding activity you may have witnessed, or if you plan on trying to do anything with your group along these lines.

Theres no vid or evidence of captive breeding activity. I seen a youtube vid a while back ago that shows two datnoids hanging out w/ one another or aggressive behavior which doesnt show anything

LOL@back on track..The main question of the thread has already been answered more than once as the biggest hurdles is sexing this fish.

I disagree - that is why it's good to have a group - If you have enough adults, for a long-enough time, it's only natural that breeding activity should occur - we don't need to know the sex, if we intend to breed them, and people who intend to breed something, normally start out with a group to improve the chances of having males and females.
So, I'd love to get some input from those who DO have long term groups of Dats.

I have a long term group as I have no plans of selling them and will keep them together as long as they get along....Yes,it's a well known practice of getting a group of fish together and waiting for them to pair off and eventually spawn and breed but with other fish, most people who have bred them know the sexual differences of them...Obviously it will take a huge tank, given the potential adult size of these naturally solitary fish, for members of a group to feel comfortable enough to breed...I think more study of them in the wild needs to be done.
