So one of my beloved EBJDs was showing signs of flared gills 2 days ago. (BOTH gills were flared, not just one side)

I put him/her in isolation so that there's no chance for it to get picked on.

I just found it died 20 minutes ago. :(

There are other EBJDs in the same tank and non of the others are showing the same flared gills as the pics show below.

Any ideas what could have cause the problem? :( Gill flukes? I would assume that it was water condition shock, but all the other fish didn't show the same problem.

Flared gills typically means poor oxygenation. Since your other fish aren't showing signs that would indicate dissolved oxygen is low, then this was likely a problem with gas exchange at the gills for this particular fish. A variety of infectious agents could be involved. Do a thorough exam of the fish looking for any abnormalities. Lift the opercula (gill covers) on either side and look at the gills. They should be a homogenous pink color (though this can change post-mortem with time).

The best way to figure out what happened would be to do a full necropsy and skin, fin, and gill scrapings to look at under the microscope.

EBJD are frail. Sometimes it just happens.

My best guess? Impossible to say, unless you run a series of tests etc like mentioned above.

My advice? Just make sure your water is appropriately filtered, changed and heated. Then, buy quality fish to start with and feed them a well and balanced diet.

Even then you'll lose some fish, rarely mind you, but it will happen to all of us now and again.

EBJD are extremely frail, especially when small. Mine was on deaths door many times, but luckily always came back around. Now he (actually I think its a she) is getting some good size on it, and is becoming very tough
