I am sure that the hole I caught them in was cooler than the tanks they went into. The tanks I attempted to keep them in wew always room temp. The spring water that feeds the hole comes out of the ground about 100 yards away, and is usualy low 50's where it comes out, but when it is hot in the summer months I would guess that specific hole I always catch the fish in gets up in the mid 60's.
Sounds like you need a chiller or to keep them in a cool basement.

soo pretty it almost looks like a german ram
Yeah I used to keep cichlids (Oscars and Convicts) until a power outage killed them all and Im amazed at some of the similarities between them and Sunfish.

I sent Zimmermansfish.com an email recently with questions and they responded thoroughly and promptly. I was planning on ordering from them to set up a 20 G tank. So far they impressed me with their customer service. Has anyone actually ordered from them? What was the experience like? Any input?

Not to derail the thread but with the darters, would you actually see them eat and you'd be surprise how long it takes water to cool down. I'd try a chiller and maybe some powerheads with pea gravel for a substrate and larger rocks as decor, that way with the current food particles will zip around.

Very true alot of people understand you need a heater with most tropical fish but dont understand that many natives need a chiller (trout, walleyem some darters and minnow species).
