Why did it die

This is a problem...not enough dissolved oxygen

Use a spray bar to increase surface agitation...

While I agree surface agitation is really beneficial, I'm curious why 12 hours it didn't have it? Still should have been plenty of dissolved o2 in the water without surface agitation. Somthing is a miss and caused a pretty instant gasping. Water temp is pretty good and should have o2 in it. I just think there is more to it then lack of agitation on the surface.

Was the canister filter not on or working and then was turned on after a long time without power? If so and it was dirty inside and hadn't been cleaned in some time that would release poisonous gasses into the tank.

That sounds quite likely to me, OP did you have a power outage or something like that?

Canister filter was off for 14 hours when my power went out, so idk could that do it

It could be that...after so long without flow through the filter, bacteria in it died, filter crashed..but that would also kill all fishes in tank not just this one..or others were extremly hardy to survive (my ancistrus survived the nitrogen cycle)

How often do you clean your canister filter? A dirty canister with no water flowing through it will turn toxic after a few hours, killing off the bacteria is the least of your worried if it turn back on and pumps all that nasty water back into your tank. This is exactly why I clean my canisters every 1-2 weeks (and why I don't really like using them), I've never understood people who will leave their canisters to collect crap for months while doing 50% water changes...

If they look deprived of oxygen either add a bubbler or make sure the surface tension of your water is broken by your existing filter you might have to lower your water level

+1

This is an easy way to wipe out a tank full of fish.
