Why DIY Stands Fail

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry to bring this back from the archives but, this was a very entertaining read.

But I have a solution to our predicament. We need to find a sponsor for a "Myth Busters" show for Aquariums!
We'll get the guy who does that deep voice for the movie trailers! :naughty:
I can see it now... "Today on Monster Aquarium Busters; can a 5' tall aquarium be built out of 1/6" clear float glass? Stay tuned!..." I'll get satellite TV just to watch that... And then we can have an insert where the scary man with the tattoos and the 300G aquarium beats up Chompers because he's arrogant. (sorry Chompers, rather you than me...)

"next week on Monster Aquarium Busters; will the GAR really eat the guppy? Tune in!" :D

Now that's entertainment!

PS. Analytical people come off as arrogant. I get accused of being arrogant all the time. I don't think I'm arrogant.

all i know is i got a store stand for a 180 and it is made of pine and there are only 2 uprights in the front and back 6 inches wide by 1/2 inch thick and its routered out so the main top rail sits on a 1/4 inch of roudered pine. the stand weighs about 50 to 75 pounds. prolly 50

I feel your shame man, I FEEL YOUR SHAME.

Now haul that pussy stand to the curb and build a monster that you can be proud of. And while you are at it, flush those pretty goldfish, neons, and guppies. We know you have them. This is MFK man, get with the program. :naughty:

good thing i read this before i start making my stand in 3 days...now i got to re-evaluate and re-plan and buy more wood...and where is all this $2 wood everyone is talking about mine is $4...inflation for shipping to hawaii...damn. good thread all...

With all do respect to everyone who has posted adding some diagnle (not spelled right) is a small price to pay for a some extra insurance I would not even consider building one with out them. I took it one step further and bolted my stand to the cement wall in my basement with turnbuckles. a little trick I learned from tjudy

these are soem dinky ass stands compared to what I just built :P when i get pictures up you guys will laugh your asses off!

Same - but heavy plywood is a waste. A thinner plywood as exterior sheathing will surprise you with it's strength. You could get away with 1/4 to 1/2 and be able to withstand a significant sideways pressure. Remember that the amount of sheering force would be distributed over a wide area of the ply, and among each and every fastener in that ply. I'm a woodworker... You'd be surprised what a well built stand with lesser material would stand up to.

Another piece of advise.... I've seen too many DIY stands that have way too many fasteners used for individual joints. More screws does not create a stronger union, it actually can weaken the joint.
