I've read a few articles that say dats like no gravel or sand in the tank. Why is that? A few other articles say that seeing their own reflection on the bottom of the tank can make them unstable.

I have a 60gallon tank right now that I'm planning to put some baby indo dats in and I'm just not sure whether to put a low level of sand in it or not.

What would you do if you had a new datnoid tank?

i keep my dats in a tank with a black painted bottom with a little bit of white gravel. they are always stable.

interesting thread, as i am looking forward to getting some dats and was wpmdering the same thing! i've seen more pics of dats with substrate then dats without them, i guess its a matter of opinion!

I have bare bottom with a few decor pieces. They're stable.

I've kept loads of Datnoids every species infact and never kept them in barebottom and apart from a couple of It's always stable.
As for preferring bare to sand or gravel i don't know because everytime i asked them they just ignored me.
