And, if all else fails, show up with a case of Natural Light, and we'll show you all you need to know about canister filters!

Heck, at this point.... give me directions and I'll be there. (LOL)

I want a full course on all the ins-and-outs of running a successful aquarium from experts instead of having to constantly piece together the puzzle little by little over a long period of time. Plus, I always question the "advice" I have been given from people over time from the lfs. I feel like I might not have been steered in the right direction.

LOL well I am no expert by any means. But what you'll find is that the more you go, your trial and error turns into priceless experience. And that is what fishkeepers on a forum have to offer, and there's nothing in it for them, really, which is the opposite of the LFS, where they're most likely trying to sell you something. You'll see that it does get easier. I know it probably seems more like a chore than a hobby right now, but it does get a lot easier after you figure out the fundamentals.

I was poking around at Drs. Foster and Smith and I found this canister filter that looks nice...

Opinions?

Yay! A great filter. What size tank do you have? I only have two of the 360's, but that 530 just came out not too long ago and I definitely want one. Just a tip, though... it's cheaper over at thatfishplace.com because you get 15% off of orders over $175, or something. We were looking at it and comparing prices earlier!

You DON'T even want to know what size tank I have.... You will probably have a heart attack.

Drs. Foster and Smith have really outrageous shipping charges. They want over $20.00 just for 2-Day shipping on the bacteria in a bottle you recommended I get. I can't remember the name of it....

I know, their shipping is crazy. Believe me, the time I used Dr. Tim's to save my ass I was in the same situation you are... watching the ammonia rise and freaking out. It sucks that the shipping is so much. And why, exactly, would I freak out? Now I'm worried!

Believe me, NONE of this stuff I'm suggesting is going to work long-term, or as well, if the volume is too small to start with... so I hope it's waaayyy too big for your stocking, rather than too small.

Well, you might want to sit down for this one....

I have my Satanoperca and the small bichir in a 10 gallon tank. This has always been intended to be a very temporary setup, I just haven't been able to afford a bigger tank yet.

I did all of this to rescue the Satanperca from my lfs and in the end he ended up getting HITH most likely through my negligence.

So, take that for what it's worth I suppose.

Okay, I'm not sure if a canister filter is going to help you here. What is your stocklist in this tank and in any others you have, along with their sizes? I may be able to help you out, as we have a couple of extra tanks. I'd sell you one very, very cheaply. But we have to figure out if that's going to really help, or if it would only be a band-aid, and in six months you'll be in the same situation! Let's figure out what size tank you actually NEED for the fish you have.

All I have right now in this tank is a 5" Satanoperca sp. and small bichir which is between 2"-3" and that's it.

Eventually, when I become rich, I want to have a 100 gallon tank with mostly Eartheaters and other peaceful cichlids mostly from Uruguay.

I love this hobby but as you know, it is SO expensive.
