Makes sense that they clean their gills after eating as the food particles often come out of their gills.

My Oscar once 'yawned' repeatedly and rapidly to dislodge a cricket's leg. I never knew about the backflushing. And yawns are good for territorial display, too, but is that really a yawn? And trying to dislodge a cricket leg isn't exactly an honest yawn, either. I'm happy to know what true yawns may be for. Thank you!
