why do hybrids cost so much when the fish they use to make them are so cheap? i dont understand the flowerhorn is not rare and it cost more that your harder to find cichlids. i not trying to hate on the hybrids ive own flowerhorns i just dont understand the price .

The only explanation I can give you is there are efforts involved in selectively breeding to obtain the strain you want.;)

Basically.. And any strain that is worth alot of money probably didn't have cheap fish in it's gene pool. While a certain species may be "cheap" to obtain at small size, large great looking breeding species of that fish probably are not. Then you have the rule of supply/demand as well.

Typical LFS just see the word "flowerhorn" and think $$$$, regardless of quality. They'll charge 70 dollars for a 4" classic ZZ with no pearls or head, they have no clue. I can understand why you'd be vexed as to why they're so expensive, I am too. LFS grade flowerhorns should be the same price as any other CA cichlid, in my opinion (I'm sure others agree). They're mostly expensive because of greed. People want money. They see masterpieces selling for high dollar and think their low grade fish can fetch a similar amount because they don't understand the hobby. It's not long before the going rate for a 1.5" fry is 15 bucks like it is here in Minnesota.

Think of them as super models. They have desirable traits and demand a higher price... Now if I could just find some excellent breeding specimens of the species I just mentioned...

If you want a basic no frills Fh then they're cheap and easy. If you want, say an SRT, $$! But the reason is because its not just a basic FH. If Im not mistaken its not easy to create this strain?. Same goes for any of the better than average strains on the market. Hi demand also raises cost too....

Breeding, raising selecting out quality. With pure breeds, you know what they will look like and no need to grow out and wonder. With FHs, the batch can be similar but not all in the batch are exactly the same look or quality.

Some FHs are just normal and are the lower quality, but ppl still buy anyways because they want a FH. But high quality are a bunch of money because not all are the same.

It's not really the strain that costs money ppl!! Don't get into it the wrong way like many others have and and waste money.. What can the strain mean if the fish of that strain looks like crap?? It's the fish that shows outstanding quality & traits not many have that makes them worthy or pricey.

There are a few ppl out there that will use strain names to represent their fish they sell. So you expect something good of the fish when you hear the cool strain, then you waste money, space, and time bringing it home then it grows out to be an average looking fish. Don't be fooled by strain. Pay your money for what you see..

Im just trying to help out..

Actually this is a very good point! I did spend a bunch of money on my FH cause it was supposed to be one of the best you could get. Well, I still have him, and I will say he is my favorite, but his selected breed is a bit mutt like.

a FH could easily become one's favorite fish due to their exclusive cool looks away from the pure breeds and personality.

Btw. Im planning to do a few breeding soon. I could've done many, but Im picky with my time on that because I don't have all the space. My strain will be named too. But the fishes will actually represent. Not what I name them. Still FHs. But if they look outstanding, they will make the name known.

So when a strain is known and popular, other breeders or sellers will use that name to show that his/her fish is that type too. That's how the part of the market is.. Not much is really official about it.
