Why do my Green Terrors grow so slow?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The chances of a GT growing from 1.5" to 4" in 30 days is zero.
Sorry, calling BS on that one.

Also, power feeding a GT will generally just end up with your GT having gastrointestinal issues. Not a good idea. If the genetics are there, and water quality & diet are sound, which it sounds like they are, then your fish will grow & mature in due time.

Thanks for the replies anyways.. I think I'll feed him a little less food then.

GT's are awesome fish i want another but slow growth was not an issue and I'm not an expert but it grew insanely fast in my thirty gal but slowed to a crawl n my twohundred twenty gallon so I moved it back to keep the growth rate up... It worked lol don't know why but have one educated guess lol

Only thing I can think of is that he had all the food for himself in the 30 gal and was not under stress/being chased by other fish.

That can be a major factor. S tress can influence growth, resistance to disease, etc, and doesn't necessarily result from physical aggression with others. Your GT may be responding to the other fish in the tank by spending more time keeping an eye on them, and being stressed out by its place in the pecking order (even without lots of physical aggression). A larger tank doesn't necessarily mean faster growth if your fish is constantly dodging competitors or losing out in access to food. Best of luck.

50% water changes twice a week seem a little much. I do a 50% once a month and seems better. My GT grows like a weed. 2" to 4.5 in three months. I've had other GTs which didn't grow at all, this new one eats anything I put in there and is extremely outgoing. One of the best, hardy fish I've ever kept.

If your GT grow slowly, it could be a female or stunt fish.

I raised several batches of GT. My GT breeders were from Malaysian import that line bred high body form and big hump. Their offsprings show variation in growth rate, ultimate size and body form. Some grow twice as fast as average, a few don’t grow much at all and become runts. My show male reached 11 inch in 3 years, while some of his brother s don’t grow much beyond 8 inch. Some males developed big hump early, while other males don’t seem to ever develop hump. The body form also varies. Some get higher body than others, and some reverse back to the long body wild form.

The growth rate also depends on what fish you compare with. In comparison to Oscar, Midas and Texas, GT are slow grower. In comparison to African cichlids, GT are fast grower.

They are slow growers man. That's just how it is. If you aren't patient, you can always fork out the wallet and buy an adult.
