Why do people buy fish without knowing enough about them?

Also, a lot of people are absolutely off their rockers and just bounce around the shop screaming about how awesome every animal they see is. Then they ask for an Oscar or a gar and one of those "plastic fish tank thingies". When you explain to them that the fish can't live in that little tank, they only gain partial comprehension of what that means and proceed to make more poor choices right away. The best thing to do about customers like that (and it's still sad) is to get them revved up about bettas or other small fish that do okay in smaller tanks (usually easy to do since the kind of people we're talking about tend to subscribe to anything the wind blows their way) and let them choose a betta for a medium-sized critter keeper. Then, once they've chosen their betta, keep talking to them while you walk to the counter. They will follow you as you push dechlorinator and a heater and filter into their hands. End the conversation at the checkout stand when the cashier starts scanning their items and you''re done with them for awhile.

people buy them on impulse and don't really know what they are getting and bad advice at the pet store doesn't help.
i was one of these people with my first tank. i was given a 30g so decide to go get some fish for it went to the pet store saw the albino oscars thought those are cool like 2" big, asked the guy helping me he said 2 oscars in a 30 no problem also sugested i get a Tiger shovelnose while i was at it (which i didn't).
after a month and a little reading on the net i realized how wrong what i was doing was.

People should do their research but so should a employee at a store selling them.
this happens i think with almost all creatures at a pet store people buy them with out knowing what they really need

Petsmart actually will have labels of behemeth fish such as oscars and id sharks listed wrong. I seen one where it sad an id shark max size--8 inches,or oscar max size ---6 inches instead of 39 for the id shark and a thick 12 for the oscar. Plus the fact newbies to the hobby have no idea between a goldfish or an african cichlid. The younger sales personal are told to sell the animal whatever it takes. Therefore the animal suffers the new hobbyist get frustrated and then leave the hobby without really enjoying it. Same is true of morons selling wolf hybrids.

Well I don't know where to start so I might bounce around. Pet store employees are usually under educated and don't ask for assistance. Most stores want the buck and the perpetual buck. That's why the sell saltwater fish that won't live in a tank. Why sell it....bc you will be back to treat it or by another one instead of doing your homework. Some fish don't do well in captivity and the poor underpaid employee needs commission. If a store sells dogs boycott then they are AKC Puppy Mills. You will know a real store when you find it. They usually stick with one or two varieties of animals and educate the €%#¥ out of you. They don't want to sell incompatible fish. They ask YOU questions bc they care about the animal. I'm stoked that you started this thread! I live in Vegas and I have narrowed it down to just 2 stores that I shop at. Don't get me wrong Petsmart is great for adoption/rescue and they only sell saltwater supplies not sw fish hence the won't sell a dead fish. However they never have cool monster fish so I go there for dog food and crickets! Sorry to bash but I am an animal lover and people need education I know that I do that's why I am a member!

It miote of been said earlyer but i egts me why the LSF even sell fish that can grow so big there is little chance of people even being able to house them, i mean there isnt many folk with a tank able to home a TSN,RTC or even the hybrid, the shop i got my hybrid from had 12 in stock and when i picked mine up there was only 2 left, so theres 9 poor catfish that will pertentionaly dead sooner than should. Why would these shops even sell gator gar, in the UK you dont have the climate for an outdoor pond for them and i have to see how many can home then indoors.

It may be a business but come on.

I am not just flaming LFS, the buyer should know better and not be ignorant to this......and grow up.

Interesting, call corporate and complain to the store that has those because they're supposed to be company wide and i believe ID sharks are listed at 25"+ and oscars either at 12" or 14" - still not completely honest on the ID sharks but definitely a lot more realistic than 8"

becuse people at places like petsmart are not educated about fish.....

Not always, I'm not an expert but i do my research and don't tell people things if I don't know the answer. Most of my co-workers are relatively informed, i don't think anybody at our store in particular is completely clueless, im tempted to go to other petsmarts and see what kind of advice is given cuz i would smack anybody that works at ours if i ever heard this kind of advice lol

Some people just dont care about the fish. They see a cute little oscar or something and buy it, stuff it in their ten gallon with blue rocks and thats the end of it. Some humans are stupid.

I don't understand why you guys are surprised at the fact that the average consumer does not understand what they are buying but that it is cool looking and everyone has one! I mean do people really need that 3000 dollar macbook pro to watch movies, check email, search for porn, and procrastinate on facebook? People buy all sorts of things that they can't even properly care for, let alone fully appreciate. I mean some people don't even treat other people as well as some take care of their fish on this forum. I hate the fact that whenever I walk through the LFS and realize that most of these fish doomed, but all I can do is take care of the fish I have and make sure I give sound advice to people I know that are interested in the hobby

I think growth rate is a big one, i have underestimated growth rate plenty of times, along with the petsmart "only as big as its tank" line. While it affects it, not as much as people (myself included) will tend to believe. It also depends on the fish, My example is the pictus catfish, claims they can get 8-10 inches, ive had tons of them (ick got them) and they never got bigger than 4, the 2 year old pictus at the LFS is 5-6 and probably wont get bigger. The 8-10 is a petsmart number, and its almost too high. My second example is the RTC/TSN i had (now joe m has it) I knew it was too big, but a high end LFS (really high end) told me, it would take about 8 months for it to not be able to turn around in my 55, i bought it knowing i would have to sell or upgrade with it, but i figured for 8 months, i could enjoy it, than find it a home where it could swim around for the rest of its life, it grew a impressive 3 inches in about 3 weeks. 10-11 to 14-15. It is another "accurate" example of fishes growth per tank size ratio. Fish came from a super stocked 40, hardly grew, the minute he got his own 55 with more food, he took off like a rocket! I think there are more mistakes (and you can even say bad judgments) than purpose full "stuffing" a fish in a tank.

because there is something about the fish which immediately intrigue the buyer at first sight. Its like having a cold beer in the winter.
