Why do people use ro/di water?

I'm not saying some people don't need it. Some stuff I've read makes it seem like the in thing to do. I was only bringing up the topic for discussion because I'm guessing there are people using it who may not need to. Also people just getting into the hobby might read somewhere they need to use it. I had read on a different site when someone asked what they needed to set up a small freshwater aquarium some guy told him to use ro/di water because that's what he used in all his tanks. He didn't tell the person to test his water and if it has high nitrates or any other problems to get a ro/di system

Aaronb I agree I do not see the need in that much waste. I also feel that a good biological system pretty much keep things in check.

RO water is really only good in fresh water if you want to bread fish IMHO. Aside from the waste it makes it cost a metric ton to reconstitute or you have to start mixing waste water with RO water and try and figure out the right mixture.

I care about waste only because I would rather spend the extra money changing more water. I would love to be on a 100% WC every 3 days.

I am wasteful in some ways but not intentionally. Like sometimes brushing my teeth I realize the water is running so I turn it off. I do take long showers 10 to 20 minutes, sometimes thats my only out.
