Why do puffers puff?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have at times witnessed my puffers puffing completely randomly and for no reason as if it were yawning or stretching... so i would have to say, as long as its not being harassed or startled it shouldn't be anything to worry bout... unless its happening constantly...

Glad you got that out of your system!

i have read alot of articles on all sorts of puffer fish species and in most cases when a puffer puffs up they die not long after. I dont know this for a fact, i havent seen it hapen. thats just what i have read.

If that were true a puffer would be an un-keepable fish because they puff up sometimes during water changes when they are being moved in or out of tanks and sometimes for nothing at all.

Many puffers have been known to puff for no reason at all-just for practice. If they puff with air though, it is likely they will not be able to expel the air, rendering them helpless, usually floating upside-down & eventually dead.

EvilKid, you need a hug! I'm glad you let that one out.

Anyways, when I netted the puffer from his bag, he puffed up, when I put him in the tank he puffed down. My wife has really taken to the puffer and has been reading on yahooanswers that puffing is the equivalent to a heart attack for a puffer. I just wanted to assure her that the puffer is fine

I will second that, or at least anger management classes.

hate those lil things my ex girlfriend put a puffer in one of my tanks (cuz she thought it was cute) anyway it was a long time ago she got it from wall mart and put it in without me knowing, well my cichlid thought it was a meal and end up floating at the top of the tank with a puffer stuck in his throat i netted the dead fish which i was really upset about and almost instantly the puffer swam out like nothing sorry to all fish lovers like me but i killed the f&*%r never again will a 3 dollar fish cost me a 30+ dollar fish anyway this is one of the many reasons shes my ex i never went through her crap id appreciate it if she stayed the f*** away from mine

sorry held that one in for a while lol:FIREdevil

EVILKID,

YOU MUST HAVE FELT SO "IN-CONTROL"...SO..."BIG & MIGHTY", KILLING THAT POOR INNOCENT PUFFERFISH? WHAT KIND OF SICK PERSON KILLS OTHER FISH...FOR BEING FISH....THEN TURNS AROUND AND ACTS LIKE THEY CARE ABOUT ANIMALS ON THIS FORUM??? I THINK YOUR STORY IS PATHETIC AND YOU SHOULD NEVER HARM INNOCENT ANIMALS FOR YOUR OWN EMOTIONAL TURMOIL IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP/LIFE...THATS PATHOLOGICAL. AND WHO CARES ABOUT MONEY WHEN YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT ANIMALS? SO ONE FISH IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANOTHER BECAUSE OF $27 DIFFERENCE... WHERE'S THE MORAL CODE?:banhim::banhim::banhim:

PLEASE GET BACK ON YOUR MEDS OR JUST PLAIN STAY AWAY FROM LIVING, BREATHING, HELPLESS ANIMALS..INCLUDING FISH.

MAKES ME SICK.

Thanks Mermaid, i really just skimmed over his ranting--missed the part where he murdered the puffer. :(

lol whatever im obviously crazy to some preachy people on here. just to be clear the value of the fish was just a representative to others, i raised the cichlid from fry for over a year and was really attached and upset that a 10 inch fish was wiped out by a 1.5 inch fish. i didn't physically kill him i put him in a baggie so i could transport him back just to find him dead about 20 min later i guess its from the stress put on him for blowing up or maybe being half swallowed might have had something to do with it duh:duh:.

chill out people if your getting that upset over one dead fish then i highly doubt im the one in need of meds :screwy:
