It's hard to argue the bang for the buck. Very easy to clean and maintain too. Plus a very good track record. Tried and true, can be found in most Petsmarts.
I wouldnt consider a ac110 or any of the other ac's cheap in price. As far as a h.o.b filter goes they are pretty exspencive when paid retail. The biggest and best reason for using a ac over any other hob filter is that every single part on the filter is replacable. Unlike other h.o.b such as bio wheels and such. Secound they are in a sence a h.o.b sump were it has a rectangle box that is smooth inside were you can put anything in it you want in a media bag. in any order or what ever you want. Instead of other h.o.b filters that are not really customizable. next you cant get prefilter for the intake such as rena filstar sponge prefilter that i use on mine so that nothing goes into the filter its self ruining the motor and other h.o.b filter have weird shaped inlets that do not allow a prefilter attachment. The highest flow rate i know of for a h.o.b filter is a plus. They are the only h.o.b filters i use on the tank i use them on and these are my reasons. I have 4 different 75's set up all using 2 ac110's and what i use for media in them is as follows. 1 filled with the full size sponge and a bag full of matrix and a filstar sponge prefilter for water polishing and mechanical and the secound one with the sponge cut in half, three boxes of fluval bio max, and a fistar sponge prefilter. I have messed around with tons of different media arrangements in them. And this is the combo that i have come up with that do the job for me. I put this together the other day about the ac110 if you havent checked it out might be of interest to you.
affordable, quick and simple to clean, moves a good volume of water, wide variety of filter media for them. all in all a great filter, run them on all my tanks.
Remove the carbon and add fluval water polishing pads.
Also put the generic blue filter material under the main sponge filter to catch the heavy gunk first.
