Definitely something you have to watch out for..... My O's jump quite often...... I'm sure if a fish doesn't have a big enough tank they will jump more, especially if being chased by a fellow tankmate. If they don't have enough room in the tank to get away they will jump as an alternative..... My O's mainly jump at feeding time because they get so excited, which really isn't that bad cause I'm there!!! Once in awhile at night they will jump but my big O has a glass lid which definitely helps. My JD has never jumped that i know of.... Not sure about FH's......
Fish jump for numerous reasons. To chase prey, escape harm, establish territorial boundaries, knock off parasites, and to signal potential mates. There are even some that jump out of the water to lay eggs above the waterline to put them out of reach of aquatic egg poachers.
Other fish like to haze eachother when there is a new guy introduced to the tank. They'll make the new guy do famous acts such as ...
1) Jumping in the filter.
2) Leaping from the tank.
3) Run into the tank walls.
Some fish become stressed during the haze, and just die from bad nerves. Fish hazing is serious business, and if you see one of your fish acting like the "ring leader" when you introduce a new fish to the tank... then yell at him through the glass until you are hoarse.
i just figured they did it because they were retarded. my apollo shark jumped out of a perfectly clean and nicely planted 125 gal. tank after i took him out of a little 20 gal. tank at the fish store. after i stepped on him barefoot in the dark, i let him know my displeasure with his decision making. he jumped through a 2 inch gap which was immediately covered up.
