Why do some people think dechlorinator is bad?

At work, a guy came in with a water sample (yer I work with fish) and he asked me to test his water... most of the tests came back okay not the best but not the worst... I could smell something weird about the water, he didnt know why his fish died... I asked him if he added something into the water.. he said he put chlorine into the water to get rid of the alage...

and people say de-clorinators are bad? Chlorine is bad.

I don't think i've heard people say that they are bad... *shrugs*

Just to be sure, dechlorinator and water conditioner such as amquel/prime is the same thing right?

This is how I hold all of my water and it is plumbed right into my tank from there. The pvc on top of the barrels are for keeping the water agitated so no algea collects.

Good question! the answer is 'not exactly'.

Sodium thiosulfate crystals can be used to make a dechlorinator solution. I mix this up and it's a super cheap way to go, but it is only a dechlorinator, it doens't get chloramines or ammonia.

Amquel and Prime will neutralize chlorine, chloramine and ammonia.

I just have chlorine in my water, so I use the sodium thiosulfate, and I know I'm not putting other stuff in there that doesn't need to be. It's still good to have amquel around for emergencies.

Sodium Thiosulfate is great, so it Prime and you need to recharge Purigen.

What I still dont get is, some people dont use water conditioner such as prime/amquel at all, because they were told chemicals are bad for your water. But then again, its mandatory/necessary aint it?
