Why do they do it.

I had a female Red Devil that would lay eggs every once in a while, I'd just let her protect them until they started to grow fungus, then I'd remove them. Easier said than done. She drew blood more than once...
 
Yeah they pack a punch the ol red devils,my convict layed eggs again yesterday!
She always lays them after a water change,guards them,fans them,but with no partner they just turn bad!
I have to give her praise,she's only small and goes up against my jd and bocourti if they come to close,I'd like to chuck a male in for her,but then they just wana fight and kill everything as convict pairs do...

I have had several females lay eggs without male partners. I have 5 Convict x Cutteri hybrids, 4 of them have paired up and periodically lay eggs and guard them like a male and female would. I also had 2 female Fenestratus do the same thing. No idea why it happens, but it is interesting to observe. Usually they eat them as they go bad so I don't worry about removing them.
