Maybe he eats them because he is stressed, my cubans used to do the same when they were in with bigger cichlids and could not protect the eggs. Or maybe he doesn't want the responsability or costs involved in bringing up a family.
lol..

your jags are breeding mbuna??? can i have some fry? or buy some?
sorry they arent successful andn i cant ship any...

well in all seriousness stress could be a cause of him eating the eggs. He isn't to concerned about paying for braces of college although when fish seem threatened they will actually eat their eggs just so no one else can. Serioulsy I know it sounds nuts. If they think they can't defend their eggs they will eat them themselves.

Is your tank in a high traffic area?? boy kids banging tonka trucks on the glass??? girl kids putting there barbies in the water to swim???? cat drinking water from the filters?? or are all those things only happening at my house:irked:

Any of those could bother them and your male could just be crackhead and constantly suffering from anxiety and keeps eating the eggs. I would try leaving the lights off for a few weeks. During the laying of the eggs and everything just leave the lights off and try to stay away from the tank. Maybe cover it with something like a blanket.

If that doesn't work then your male is useless and needs to be fried LOL

ill do that next time, i dont think shane had any problems with him tho..?

Just siphon the eggs out next time after you see that the female is just tending to them.

Some cichlids eat their eggs for numerous reasons, but it seems strange to do it after they have already bred. Who knows. Try the siphoning thing and that will see if they are fertile, just watch out they don't take a chunk out of your hands when you are vacuuming them.

i know dam i s00k at breeding fish.

you could try removing the eggs and rock they are on, put them in you dads little tank with a air pump, I have found un like Cuban fry Jag fry are hardy little buggers, you would have a lot better chance of growing the Jag fry on that you did the Cuban fry, I did have 50% / 50% Jag Cuban mixed fry in my 10G, the cuban fry was a few weeks older than the Jags and now im only left with Jag fry!

REMOVE THE EGGS see what you get out of it.
