I don't understand why they don't get the concept of glass. I mean, fish, snakes, and other animals do. I'm not saying tortoises are dumb, no way, my tortoise is very smart. But why do tortoises do it?

Well, snakes and lizards try to go past the glass as well, but they give up once they can't find an escape route. I means if you watch your snakes when you place them back in the enclosure, they are usually prowling the glass then go back to their normal cage behavior.

With tortoises, they think they can force everything down with brute strength. However that is just my theory. I don't have a hepetological answer for it.

You're right, I was a bit ignorant in my post. Other animal try to escape the glass a bit, but they soon stop, like my snake for instance. But I wonder, why do tortoises persist?

Ill have to check when I get home from work but I do have an article on torts that states that one should never keep them in a glass enclosure because of this. They will do it until they hurt themselves.......and then do it some more.

i could agree w/ this. a tortoise thinks they can push through anything.

Torts are very smart...they shouldn't be kept in glass tanks, he knows this, and is trying to convince you of the same. ;)

Get a nice open air system or pen-style enclosure for him...

Glass tanks + reptiles = old school

I agree with everyone here that tortoises and most other land turtles like box turtles, should NOT be kept in glass aquariums where they can see out. This is very stressful to them. Stick with rubbermaid tubs or custom made enclosures.
