Why do tortoises bang against glass?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you can make a structure out of wood that can fit around thte enclosure that is a about 6 inches tall... This willl maybe only a temp fix though, and put it on the outside..

I saw a tortoise in a glass tank at a distributor yesterday, and it was the same thing banging against the glass. I guess they just don't like glass tanks.

Heh, I have seen African Spurred turtles doing the same thing in kiddie pools and other tortoises do the same thing in clear rubbermaids. The African Spurred can see over the lip of the kiddie pools, so that's why...

It just that they don't like being constrained if they know it.

Hey, guys, I definetly agree that tortoises shouldn't be kept in glass tank, and I know that. But my question was, why do they do it?

Because they don't understand the concept of glass. They see out, but can't get out. Fish do the same thing.

i read recently that torts always have the grass is greener on the other side syndrome, they are wonderer's and thats what they want to do,evidently really badly, lol.Makes since i think.

it helps if you put mirror tint (that is a last option on inside of tank) but you cannot tint whole tank you half to black out half and put the heat lamp on that side so he/she does not think they can dig through
