Why do you keep fish?

Just want some feedback as have just got a good friend of mine into fish keeping a while back I ripped my shoulder at work and found it had to maintain my fish room (Bare with me on this) so my mate who had only had goldfish helped me after a wile I noticed he was showing a lot of interest asking about water changes feeding etc etc well at the weekend we set up his first tropical tank and I have donated him a dwarf snakehead (he has a love for snakeheads now)and a Hujeta pike to start him off my love affair for fish stems from my dad who used to take me to shows and had a very large fish room I remember he was the first man to win a show with a flowering Cryptocoryne he discovered that they only flowered out of the water so grew one in a bog garden so this is why I got into fish keeping this is why my friend Peter is now into it so what started you come on should be some great stores here I listen to my dad telling me about his swords he used to keep in his slate bottomed tanks with a candle to heat them how things have changed ..................................

yeah, my dad used to keep live bearers in slate bottom tanks too, no filters or heaters an complete water changes once a wk.. i actually could find no good reason to keep fish when i was a kid until i kept a s.a. horned frog and kept a 20l with feeder goldfish in it to feed to him. i added a few small oddball fish occasionally 'cause they looked cool, but i didn't know anyhting about water changes or good husbandry , so naturally everything died. I killed every piranha i ever got, again, due to ignorance, I just kept Reptiles and arachnids. until moving into an apartment that didn't allow herps. so i sold them all an decided to keep fish.At the time i worked at a lfs, and started reading about all these "oddballs" like aros, snakeheads, bichirs etc. started reading everything i could get my hands on about fish keeping and soon had more tanks than i had room for.fish came and went over the years,i finally graduated to saltwater and now that's all i currently have, but since joining this website, i'm ready to "get back to my roots" and set up some fw tanks again. and plan on building a plywood, /glass 240 in my basement when funds allow.

I don't know.... Maybe it's because I'm a pisces (kidding) :) . Had a tank when I was a kid and loved the fish but wasn't big on all the work involved.... Only had the tank about 6 mo before getting rid of it. Now, 14 years later, I have 7 tanks set up and 2 put away until I see something that I just ABSOLUTELY can not live with out...... I'm sure it will happen soon!!! As an adult started with a 5 gal and a goldfish. Then had 2 Kribenesis (spelling) that had fry and I was absolutely thrilled. Bought a 45 gal, and then a 55 gal, and then a 125 gal (which unfortunately I sold.....), and then a 30 gal, and then a 47 gal, ummm.... have no idea where the two 20 gal's came from..... and here I am..... MY brother has a tank because of me, my boyfriend was completely impartial to fish when I met him and now he talks to them and loves them as much as I do. Where it goes from here I do not know..... Thinking that 50,000 gal mega-tank sounds pretty sweet........

I keep fish for the stress release. nothing is more relaxing than watching fish swim so fluidly and gracefully in my glass box, or watching corals sway in the current. reef tanks mesmerize me for hours on end sometimes

started as a planted tank for me thougt aquascaping would calm my nerves suffer from a stress related disorder won't go into details
and as time progressed the fish and reptiles came into the picture now i've devoted all my free time to maintaining tanks and fish in the best conditions possible since i've the year off from an industrial acccident this hobby has grown and now i do quite a bit of reasearch on chemistry and illinesses related to aquatics even some touching on humans ive grown because off fish keeping and has even prompted me to look at a fish store of my own
this is a great hobby .

it started because i live in an apartment building and cant really keep anything else. me and the g/f were like oh yeah lets get a fish tank. we'll get that 30 gallon one over there that comes with everything... oh look that 55 gallon comes with everything too, and it's only $30 more. lets just get that one instead..... 7 tanks later here i am LOL.

I don't know!

this may sound strange, but i have fish because my parents wouldn't let me when i was younger.

when i was 7 or 8 years old i went to a lfs and was amazed by the fish available. unfortunately my parents were under the false impression that even a basic fresh water tank took as much time and money to maintain as a reef tank and nixed any possibility of fishkeeping.

when i met my current fiance and found out she was into fishkeeping i about lost it. i went out that night and bought a full freshwater setup and a 46gl bowfront. 3 years later and i'm at a 300gl and contemplating my final tank when i buy my last house next year....thinking 120L x 30W x 60H....930gl or so!
