Why do you keep fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wanted to keep fish because a neighbor had a 5 gallon with 2 fancy goldfish, so I basically bought a 5 gallon that I bought, as well as 2 feeder goldfish. They died on the 3rd day, then when I was at soccer practice, my sister, my brother, and dad went and bought a 20 gallon, with gravel and everything, even 3 fancy goldfish. I had black moors, fancys, comets, and also a betta in there. After I stopped with goldfish, I started with tropical fish, which my first community had 2 angelfish, 2 bala sharks, 3 tiger barbs, 1 chinese algea eater, and 2 clown loaches. When I was gone one day, and came back the next day, the entire tank was brown and all my fish where dead, so we started over and got mollies, gupies, angelfish( That kept dieing on the 2-3 day.), chinese algea eaters, and that's it. I got my sister into the hobby where she bought a 5 gallon and got 2 mickey mouse platies that lived in cold, unfiltered water, and when she moved out into about the 5th apartment, she got a 20 gallon and took over 20 of my molly fry. I also got my mom into the hobby, as she got a 75 gallon, started with 2 oscars, 2 paradise fish, 1 common pleco, 2 spotted rafael catfish, 2 rainbow sharks, and 3 tiger barbs. And I tried getting my brother and dad into the hobby, didn't work. I've been in the hobby 7 years and I have 2 tanks.

watched my father's friend 's 20'' clown knife in a 250 gal swim back and forth one nite and said to myself I want one !! so thats how I contracted the sickness.. :D

I dont know either...

i liked watching themwhen i visited a friends he had a 6' community tanks.
i first got piranha years back as they came with a second hand set up and i got into rarer piranha from the net and forums.
i got into oddballs through forums and actually someone i met on the forums (lophius), he advised me to get an arowana when i was selling my mixed pygo shoal.
i bought my first asian at his local lfs it was a green.
the rest is history really

My boyfriend bought my best friend a betta, then I got a bunch, then a 10gallong and I just enjoyed the peace of the tank, watching the fish swim around and taking care of them in hopes my tank is a better home then the pet stores. Then I became fasinated with them and how each one acts towards another and how some eat everything and others are picky and etc... then it just sparked a huge intrest....

I've always like fish... but one day, all of a sudden fell in love with them. It all started at a friends house, we were all drinking, talking s**t, laughing, having fun! He asked me to come over and take a look at his 100 gal. fish tank, He said just look! Don't they look so peacefull, just elegantly swimming around? At that moment it just hit me, BAM! All of a sudden i started imagining like they were in a tank swimming around with no water just like floating in mid air, having fun going from one side to the other and knowing that we are watching them so they showed us they're interesting behavior.
Has anyone ever imagined this? If not, Try it... Just block out everything in your mind including sound and anything around you that would interfere, and just watch your fish!
(It may work better if you have a few drinks to relax.) :naughty: :grinyes:

hmmmm...when i was 16 or 17 i used to keep mice in a 30gal tank that i found at my grandparents house. eventually a snake got into my mice tank and ate all my mice. so i had an empty 30gal tank. i went to the lfs to get more mice but when i got their my gf said i should get her a fish. my mom was always complaining about the possibliliy of a mouse getting out of my tank and starting a den in the house somewhere...so i bought my first fish, 1 oscar for me and 5 guppies for her. nobody warned me about cic's back then. one day we were watching tv and my gf started screaming!!! my oscar was attempting to eat one of her guppies, it's tail was sticking out of the oscars mouth like some kind of mutant tougne. from then on i was hooked...gf got me a 60gal for my birthday...now i have my old 60gal, 55gal, 40gal, 2x10gal, and the old 30gal. even brought the 30gal with me when i joined the military.

i have always liked fish but just needed a kickstart to go tropical, when a mate showed me that they were a piece of cake i never looked back, also i can diy a lot of stuff and try new things with fish so its always interesting
