Why do you keep Old World Cichlids instead of New World Cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I keep both, although my preference is still New World due mostly to "personality" of many fish, and that I'm not too fond of mouthbrooders, but I kept some Tanganyikans, and now getting into haps.

Most of the ca/sa cichlids grow considerably larger than their african counterparts and are more aggressive to their tankmates, while africans are aggressive you can have more fish and larger variety in the same tank. Some peeps like one or a few larger fish in their tank, some really prefer a "community" setup (even with larger and more passive haps), some have space for a pool in their basement, some don't :), all a matter of preference.

I just happened to start out with Old Worlds. I have gradually slipped into a few New Worlds. I love them all.

I kept new worlds for more than 20 yrs then 5 yrs ago moved to a new home that had extremely hard water and a ph near 9. My new worlds were suffering so i traded them in on some africans and thats what i keep now. I do have a pair of huge oscars that i rescued and because they were in ph 8+ for several years I have been able to keep them . I admit though i really like the africans now and dont know if i would go back to new worlds even if i could LOL.

I grow fond of a particular fish, whether it is old world or new world depending on the individual characteristics of the fish. I prefer old world because the coloration for the most part is a lot better but new world I prefer if I want something I can feed the occassional old world to.

I would have to say, in general, I am an Old World person for all of the reasons posted above, I just have an affinity for some of those New World monsters.

Old World for me. I've kept new World in the past, and will prob. have a few in the future when I upgrade houses. As for now I am stuck in the oldies, but goodies.
