Why do you like peacock bass????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It started a long time ago for me. When I was younger, I was a die hard fisherman. Didnt care what was I was catching, as long as I was fishing. As I got older, I started leaning heavily towards fishing for LMB. I was all about it. Read every article I could find, had subscriptions to magazines, skipped football practice to go fishing, "borrowed" my uncles boat a few times, and day dreamed about fishing for them almost constantly. One day my uncle who was a tournament fisherman, turned me onto these "peacock bass" that were alot like LMB but elevated considerably. Being that I was young and pretty much broke, there was no way I was going to be able to take a trip to S. America anytime soon. So after alot of reading and wishing, I eventually gave up on them. Later on in life I kept and grew out a few LMB, and after keeping them I really started to appreciate what the fish was all about, and it changed my whole philosophy on fish in general. Then one fine day I was at the LFS and for the first time ever, I saw "peacock bass" for sale. I was absolutely wow'd. That started bringing back all those old feelings and day dreams about the elusive peacock bass that I thought Iwould likely never get to see. After doing some research, I soon realized that with my situation at the time, there was no way I would be able to afford to house peacock bass. The peacock bass had eluded me yet again. But I always said "one day, I will keep them in my tank." About 5 months ago after purchasing my first house, that opportunity came. I bought 3 ocels from a LFS, which died after about 1 month of owning them. Thats when I found MFK, and it was only then that my eyes really got opened to the world of Cichla. So for me, Cichla are in essence a holy grail of sorts, a life long passion and dream that is finally starting to come to life. Im loving every minute of it and this is only the beggining!

As said many times before Cichla owners are previous or current pitt bull owners. I myself am a previous pitt bull owner. Since the ban in Colorado on all Pitt breeds and associated breeds with any pitt or bull dog mix. I figured I would feed my need for over the top aggression with the true Pitt of the fresh water world Cichla. When there youung the act like Pitt puppies when there adults the act like grown pitt's. Aggressivnes at it's finest. After getting into to Cichla I begun to see there true beatuy and amazing variation of colors that they can obtain and there sheer dominance in the tank was all I needed to have me hooked for life. The colors the attitiude the power of Cichla is all I need to get by in this cruel cruel world. And I just couldn't imagine raising a Cichla that could obtain 24'' in the home aquaria so hey let's go for it. It's like climbing Mt. Everest in the Cichlid hobby. Taming the Cichla is the best way to put it.

simple...the fact that they can be a chore to keep compared to many other cichlids.
i love the challenge of keeping such large powerful fish.
the fact that theres so many species out there and soon to become available to us.
the vibrancy of their colors.
you dont get that on many large, predatory fish.
and their attitude...so much like pitts in the water.
the way they eat...im sure everyone has this reason. :headbang2:ROFL:
they have easily made their way up my list since i discovered them 2 years ago.

i like their coloration, eyes, feeding habits, and pretty much just overall appearance

they are just nice fish, overall, but i don't see them as pits, i see them as rotts

Could never be more true. I have had pits all my life, and most of the people around me have them too. Heres my current one. Her name is Chopper
