People always talk about getting fish to grow big, fast. Is there some reason this is healthier for them, or is it just personal preference? Or does it more have to do with the idea that if the fish grows fast it is a sign that the water/food needs are being well met?

Just wondering because I never really think like that, I just feed once a day a variety of good quality foods, keep up on water changes and figure as long as they are healthy they will grow however fast they grow.

It's just personal preference, there's a reason we're called Monster fish keepers! ;) As long as you are keeping good water quality and feeding well, it is of no real matter, though.

I think it's personal preference and a sign the tank is doing well.

But if you feed any fish nothing but beef heart it will grow really fast. So good water isn't always the case.

feed your fish the diet he eats in the wild. or close to it, quality pellet or quality flak should be main diet, can you feed straight protein and get more growth? sure. but you compromise longevity, to much protein not good. so in the long run, big now? or more than likely bigger later as it did not die off early.

this taking excellent water quality in account.

I'm guessing you are not referring to fish that strictly eat other fish in the wild....To the topic, most young and small fish I have bought were intended to be placed in a display with larger fish so for me it was good to get them to get some size so they would be safe with the others.

Bigger is better, to me... Because i usually buy babies that i have to grow out, theyre cheaper and less rare. For this reason having them grow fast means less time in the grow out tank. Im doing it with 8 geophagus and 2 bichirs atm and its annoying lol

agreed depends on the fish, jags carnivores, Oscars omnivores. but in both cases quality pellet or flake your best choice of main diet. can subsidize as i do with other things, treats, jumbo krill soaked over night in boyds for that protein and vita kick, vegies and fruits for the Oscar. IMHO beef heart should never be a part of a cichlids diet.
