Why does he act scared?

my female midas went through a shy stage recently. i figured out it was the convicts and the HRP i had in with her. the female cons i had in were picking on her and she simply must not have liked the HRP.
when they went she was out and about again and she still has tankmates.

After reading other people's posts, I think I have a better understanding. You're saying he freaks out and crazily swims everywhere without concern of running into things and possibly hurting himself. Might want to take out any sharp objects in the tank until he bravens up some and stops spazzing.

The tank hes in isnt overcrowded with anything. Hes got one big spot with shelter and one smaller spot. He does like it more when the light is off i noticed. I just thought he would already be big enough and settled to not be soo scared. But when he wants food, hes right there at the front waving me over, lol. I wish he was more aggressive and wouldnt be such a suck. I thought 50gal would be big enough for at least one GT.

I don't think that your tank is too small for a GT of that size, but it will increase the chance that he gets hurt during one of his "lose my mind and swim into the glass at full speed" episodes.

I have had fish that grew up perfectly contentedly until they reached a certain size and then got spooked once and never got back to normal.

If your GT is really spooked, I would say that some sort of dither will help him relax. Other than that, be careful when moving near and past the tank.

My JD and GT are liek this to...i can get my other fish to hand feed...they will come up to my hand and take qa bite of blood worm maybe once out of the ten minutes i do it for....but as for me walking past teh tank...they get crazy scared and swim erratically.

My Texas is chilled out and don't move....my Vieja and Cons and Dollars are always out flirting for food.

Still my africans where the most 'friendly' and least scared...anytime anybody...including the cat woudl come near the tank they would horde to the top begging.

haha this sounds just like my africans i have atm LOL i could have just fed them, walked away and come back to tank no more than 2min later and they are back at top begging like they are starving lol

My brother-in-law has a larger GT in a 55 gal. tank. His GT is about 10" or so and quite the spazz. His face has callus on his chin and is usually missing scales on his hump. The fish is too big for 55 gal. Everytime you stop to look at this goregous fish he flips - swimming erratically all over the tank banging into the decor, the heater, filter tube, glass, and the lid the more he hits the more erratic his behavior becomes. Removing sharp objects was cute - but the reality is his fish needs a bigger tank.
