Why Does My Fish Tank Smell?!?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, i didn't wash the old gravel because i figured it would wash off the beneficial bacteria therefore rendering it useless, but i guess i was wrong. the smell did go away by the time i got home that night but i'll post in here again if it comes back. for future reference i feed them massivore, frozen carnivore food, and algae wafers for the pleco. and the only food the stays at the bottom is the few pellets i leave for my channel, but he finds them relatively quick so i just sit and watch and wait for him to find them (i leave them all in a corner).

I wonder if the smell could be from the BB from the gravel dying (didn't survive move). I once let a canister filter sit after shuting a tank and when I opened it up it was rank as heck.

if you bought this tank on saterday and have stocked it full of fish and are feeding them like normal... theres the answer to your question!
It smells as its a new tank that shoulve been cycled and you may get away with it if you do like 30-50% WC's every one to two days to keep the fish alive

lol i was going to say massivor too

i feed them massivore

This is your problem. Don't worry, lots of us feed massivores and sinking pellets and experience this smell before. It's meant to attract fishes (apparently not the case for humans -_-). Adding carbon will reduce the smell. I put up with the smell for 2 weeks before deciding to try carbon. After an hour after I dump in seachem carbon, no smell!
