So a week ago i spent an hour explaining very carefully to my neighbor how to set up her new 5g tank and her limited stocking options. i went through cycling, and all t hat jazz. today she comes to asking for her because all her fish died. she added after running the tank for two days 5 goldfish and did not use any dechlorinator. i dont know what she blatently went against everything i said? this isnt the first time this happens to me. my cousins do this all the time. ill tell then one thing and advise and they do the opposite which eventually ends in dead fish. happens at stores to ill try to help someone and give them good tips and theyll go ask the attendant and screw everything i just said. is it that hard to fathom to most people that someone could be knowledgable in fishkeeping? is it cause im a woman? cause im a young woman? seriously where do they think im pulling my information out of that i couldnt possibly know what im talking about?so frustrating. does anyone understand what im saying?

I think it has to do with people wanting to take the easy route + in a rush to add fish + not taking advise to heart...

I've had it happen a few times which is why i dont bother helping people any more unless i can tell they genuinely want to learn

I feel ya. That's why I'm not going to bother explaining anything to anyone anymore. Waste of breath, if there serious about this they will do there own research or have taken your advice.

Know what you mean! Use to work in pets at Walmart and I would clearly explain to them that an Oscar could not live in a 29 gallon and they buy 3! People should be aloud to own fish if they don't know how to take care of them.

I think the casual "fishkeeper" just doesn't retain the info long enough for it to stick. They just want a tank with some pretty fish.

The true "hobbyist" will take the time to do the research, join a forum or a club and will ask you the same question over and over till they get it right.

I have a co worker who proudly boasts about his oscar that is kept in a 40 gallon tank.He pays someone to come in monthly to clean the tank.I tried to talk some sense into him and I told him that I do fifty percent water changes and he had the nerve to tell me that that's too much.

Lol to much? the one about people being warned about the saize of the fish only to buy 3 of them is rediculous. . as for my neighbor i told her look ill give u my filter so u can run it and seed urs and u can have fish and well its been two days and she still hasnt come get it. im sure shes out buying 5 more fish.atleast when her fish keep dying maybe shell just give me the tank :) :headbang: But it kills me that people could be so stubborn. i mean shes seen my house what makes her think i DONT know what im talking about. and as far as people being eager to get fish pet stores dont rly help either they encourage the 24hour magic cycling. i once had a majjor chain store manager tell me in an interview "well u cant tell them how long cycling really takes because in that time they might go somewhere else for thair fish and were in the business of making money"
