Why exactly can't we use Hot water on a Drip System?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
SO WE ARE SuPPOSED to use cold eater in the winter?

Just use cold from a practical perspective. It cost money to heat water. No need to heat water and then cool it in your tank.

My initial thought is to eliminate the need for a 300watt heater running compared to the way cheaper gas from a water heater.

In talking to the filterguys, he said no.
Since I have a way to go in growing out my prize fish, I may try it out on my current setup (not prize fish tank).

Still trying to dig up info but its hard when I'm constantly on the move.

I have been and am dripping Hot water and cold water together, been doing it for about 4 months now and no issues, heaters run less on the tank but also it takes a while to dial in because you can increase the tank temp allot with very little hot water and you can also decrease the temp with very little pure cold water running into the system, and my system is about 670 ish gallons. You need to have a line of each because as I said just a little bit of hot can increase a tank temp a ton and it takes me a few days to dial everything to the right temp, then of course ill mess with it and takes another couple days to change again I have a couple heaters set so that if it gets down to about 76 they kick on and if it gets a touch less then that all the heaters will turn on to cover incase for some reason something happens, Summer will be intersting to see what happens with the water, the winter I think is a little harder as the water is so cold from the cold water line, during the warmer months my water can come out at a much warmer temp because of heating with water like this I really wish I had a monitoring system that I could check on the temp, for now I check the temp all the time when ever I am home and also ask about the temp when my wife is home. Electrical bill is less and hot water heater does not seem to run any more at all, gas price is the same to a touch higher, but electrical sayings is in half of what I was using(counting pump and heaters) I am running filterless in my area with no problems so strait from the water line to the tank. As you are all aware all areas are different so do as you feel, Here is my tank, Heavy stock in my opinion, about 35 fish and 8 stingrays.

Lovely tank buddy and glad to hear someone is trying it.

The only issue I could see is whether the drip system materials are not rated for warm water.

That said, mine drip system for my 50+ tank fishroom was constructed from irrigation drip materials and I ran all temperatures of water through it - hot, warm, cold - without issue (for years).

I do water changes (through a garden hose from my utility sink) on my tanks every day.

Are people saying that they only use cold water to do water changes because of "minerals" in their hot water heaters?!?

Interesting idea I had not considered. I am building a 675 ray tank that I am going to heat from the hot water heater. I was also going to add a drip system. I think I might allow a controlled leak from the heat exchange unit. That way when hot water is flowing, it is also adding to the drip and not lowering the temperature. It would only be adding heated water when heat was required. I will have to think this through, but I see something on the horizon.

Here is mine super simple, can adjust the flow to anything I want with these valves, then I run a small thick wall white tube from the valve into the tank bottom where the hot and cold mix with the other water right at the pump inlet.
