Why Hikari?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
since i started feeding the mini pellets in my planted tank the fish that were shy and stay hidden come to the front of the tank before the lids even open so theres not much of a chance for it to foul the water ..

Howdy,

What I hate about most Hikari varieties (not all) is that they contain copper sulfate. Why in the world would I want to feed that to my fish? Important trace metals are added, too - but copper??? My personal conspiracy theory is that the copper in the feed will diminish algae growth, which is often a problem with (over)feeding big(ger) fish. People notice that they have less algae with some foods, and they stick with them. But is this really worth it? Exposing your fish to heavy metals thru feed? C'm on, we add water conditioner to get rid of them during water changes, we filter thru carbon when we are done with treatment of diseases with copper solutions. Yet, we feed our fish copper sulfate???

Has anyone ever read the entire ingredients list of some Hikari varieties, and thought about it? I would be interested in alternative views.

Thanks,
HarleyK

Just my oscar gets the hikari pellets and his color and health are awesome. Thanks for the headsup on the copper harley Ill make sure I dont toss a pellet to my brigs

I dont use any fish food that contains corn meal or fish meal or.... double processed horse head meal. And why so many brands of fish food use corn meal is beyond me, when corn is indigestable to fish.

Hikari Ingredients:

White fish meal, wheat flour, wheat-germ meal, brewers' dried yeast, soybean meal, dehydrated alfalfa meal, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin A supplement, l-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), vitamin B12 supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, choline chloride, D activated animal sterol (source of vitamin D3), folic acid, menadione sodium bisulfite (source of vitamin K activity), inositol, para-aminobenzoic acid, zinc oxide, manganous oxide, salt, ferrous chloride, copper sulfate, cobalt sulfate, aluminum sulfate, magnesium sulfate.

There are much worse products out there than Hikari. Like Wardley. Wardly is horrible. Thats one kind that does use Corn meal.

I only use Omega One fish food.
Everything in it is WHOLE.

WHOLE salmon, herring, shrimp, and other seafood ingredients

They use fresh, cold water marine proteins and kelp, as ingredients, instead of fishmeal and a whole lot of starch (like everyone else)

Then why add it as copper sulfate

Copper is not manufactured by the body but ingested 99% is passed out of the body
