Hi, this is my first thread.
I need some information about how to keep c.plurothalma. Eventhough I've read all the sticky threads, still couldn't figure out how to keep c.pluro succesfully.
My tank for them isi 55g.
I tested my water in the aquarium and it was ok with amonia n nitrite 0, and nitrate < 20. But still my pluro die one by one every other day. Anybody could help me ?
Execuse me for my poor english. THX

Hi Tropheus.
I had 5 15cm pluros on September '08. They all died in a month.
Last week I bought 5 , 15cm, and 3 left now. I keep them in 55g, planted, rocks and sand. Regular water changes twice a week for 30%. Temp 26-28C. Ph 6,5-7. No tankmates. The last 2 that died, I saw nothing suspicious, only little scratch on the body.
Somebody told me not to change the water, is that true ?
I keep c.micro, C.Gachua, C.Striata. C.Lucia and they all in a good condition. They live in seperate tank.

i think we have just solved your mistry mate , and someone told you quite correctly the water changes are indeed the most liklet cause of the deaths

i will be honest with you , if i kept mine with 30% water changes twice a week i would not expect them to survive.

pleuro more than anyother snakehead is prone to die after a water change , the smaller they are ,the worse it is .

of the 6 i bought a few months ago i have lost 2 , both after a water change.

remember if you are planted well you do not need to do water changes so often , once every 2 months on a planted pleuro tank is about right , you should still only change around 30 % BUT the change water MUST but the same temp as the tank water , pleuros like the warmer end of the tropical scale , so if your keeping them at 26 go upto 28 and no less , you may use slightly warmer water when doing a water change but never use colder water on pleuros.

as i said on the last reply pleuros are very delicate at smaller sizes , and even if everything is done correctly out of a group of 10 i would still expect to loose 2-3. , but i think if you follow the water change /temp advice you will be sucsessfull , it sound like you are doing everything else correctly

wish you look mate

I used to have the same problem too. I bought 8x 2-3" pleuros and all died within less the a months. U bought another 15 again 3 months later and 9 of them died. However the remaining 6 are not doing well and already at 5"-6". They are now much more hardier and aggressive feeder.

I noticed that skittish pleuro will likely to die of an unknown reason when they are still smaller.

Try to keep it in minimized flow rate tank. I think it like clean & low flow rate water.
I do this and I can change 100% water for them.

:eek: 100% , on pleuros , without any losses. ? are you matching the temp 100% to acheive this. i have found a drop in temp of only 4-5deg is enough to kill off any juviniles.

Thanks for the info everyone.
@Tropheus
Because I live in a tropical country, the temp wouldn"t be any problem, i guess. But nowdays is the rainny season, and the the natural water is lil colder from the water from the tank. I'll do what I think should do, water changes every 3 months.
The last 3 pluros look well today.
@oleoleole
I used eheim 2215, the waterflow is slow.

Hey,
sorry to hear from the dead of your pleuros. I got a group of 20 Pleuros in my 240Liter AQ. I lost till now only 1, so 19 left. I think the lost wasnt my failt, it was the tiny one of the boundle and didnt look well. They grow now from 4cm to 14cm and swim in normal German Housewater. PH 6,8-7,1, Temperature 26°C one Tank made Aquarunichthys torosus with 14cm, a couple of Feeders with fast decreasing amount :-).
I do every week only 15% waterchanges, which had the same temperature as the water in the tank had. I think it is important to do Waterchanges continously but with the same temperature as the water has in the tank. I fill the fresh water behind the HMF filter in the tank, because i heard alot of pleurodeath when the pleuros swim through the incomeing fresh water. End of February my Pleuros will move to the new 600liter Tank, finger cross that all will be go quick and good.
Sorry for my poor english knowledge, but iam out of germany and didnt have alot of possibilities to keep it on the level in the past.
Best Regards

Ampa´
