Why I like aquariums for snakes/rant/point being made

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mainly turtles (Trachemys, Pelodiscus, Sternotherus, Chelydra and Rhinoclemmys), along with 2x Tokay geckos, 3x Golden geckos, a Bullsnake, a Colombian Rainbow Boa, an axolotl, and a brown snakehead (Channa gachua).

Not a colossal collection, but plenty for me to deal with!

Best,
Paul

It is a great collection. I have kept sverela chelydras and both staurotypus types, as well as some kinosternon.

In snakesdom, GTP, ETB and a coiple of Bloods.

I am one of the guys that recommends totes, although I dont use them myself.

As for security, totes are great. I handle my snakes frequently enough that they are very tame and are comfortable in open settings. Snakes that are not handled as often get my stressed out from the open, the same way they tend to be more head shy and/or aggressive. Also I use multiple hides and climbing sticks.

As for humidity, totes hold it great. Yes glass doesnt let out water, but that open screen top doesnt allow for humidity to stay. So you more or less end up with the same humidity as the room. Also, all too often people use heat lamps with herps that dont need it. I only use heat lamps during the winter when room temps drop into the 50s and 60s. The heat lamps dry the enclosure though. I cover up most of the top with a damp towel to increase humidity.

Really glass tanks are great, just more work in their own way. I recommend plastic totes due to the ease of maintenance. They are also more forgiving of neglect since humidity and temperature are easier to maintain for longer periods of time. Totes on the other hand, do not come in such varied sizes and it can be harder to find a proper size for your herp.

On a side note, I think building your own custom tank is best. You can design it to hold humidity and temp. Make it comfortable and stress free for the herp and design it for ease of cleaning
