Why Is Driftwood So Expensive?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is over priced due to demand. People in the hobby know how it can transform a tank.

Sure it costs but what hobby isn't expensive? One thing it will last for years. I have 2 nice peices in my 70 that are going on ten years old/ using pieces you find are a pain omo. They sometimes don't sink they are sometimes full of toxins they surly don't look as good. I have angelfish and like to have that tea colored water that amazonian fish all love. With store bought no surprises with dead fish or anything like that. Not saying you can't find something safe or good looking by some lake but to me not worth the risk and time. Buy that cool piece its only money.

I have close to 300.00 in manzanita. does'nt grow anywhere near Chicago. imo it's by far the best looking wood. it's rock hard and will last for many years. it only takes a few weeks of soaking to sink. some driftwood never sinks and must be held down with slate.

Good wood makes a difference, I have a large piece looks good and hasn't hurt my fish. BUT after a year it still hasn't sank and even after removing the bark I still have layers of it come off in thee tank. I paid nothing for it so I got what I paid for, how ever if I had the money I would rather have a good piece off wood.

If we dont get more snow I am going collecting in a couple days. I have a sweet spot to say the least. PM me. Ill give you some you just pay for shipping. I can arrange it for you to pay directly to the shipper so your money doesnt go to a stranger!

Thanks for the offer man. I found some DW from a member here on MFK. It was about 3 1/2 feet long and had some nice branches. Plus it was only $25 -- exactly what I was looking for. I think the thing with DW is that it's expensive but the key is to wait for a good price and a piece you're happy with. Here's a pic of the one I got. It's the one at the top.
