Why is it when ever you buy a fish you really really want and have waited so long to get them, they end up getting sick. I am currently treating one, possibly two on my 5 channa bleheri due to an ich infection. I understand it's really hard to keep babies of any species healthy, but it seems like the nicest fish are the weakest. I've had Florida gars, af pikes, ornate bichirs and wolf fish all of which couldn't catch a desease no matter how crummy the water was. However, no matter how hard i try to maintain a healthy tank for these bleheri i fail to do so, as experienced previously with my Fahaka puffer (rip).

No challenge = no fun
If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.
That would make us all so boring!

Some fish are mor prone to diseases than other...Gars and bichirs are bullet proof. I once had an outbreak of ich in my 130g tank, and the only one that did not get sick was the bichir... Then there's my Blue Jack (see avatar) who gets sick probably once a month, he gets fungus a lot.

If you have 1-2 on 5 fish that are sick with ich, treat them all. They might already be infected and you can't see it (they are still babies), and the ich bug is flowing in the water at one of it's stage. So I suggest you get rid of ich once and for all.

And don't feed feeder goldfish, or do like me buy 200, treat them all and then feed the channa from your feeder tank.

Good luck!

The best way to make it easy is OVER FILTRATION. If you have about 10 gallons of GPH per 1 gallon of tank capacity you can get away with a lot of stuff that people say you can't do. I have a 180 gallon tank which has more than 2000 gallons per hour of flow. There are over 40 fish in it, many of which are over 8", some over a foot. I never test the water parameters. I can throw 100 feeder gold fish in there with the dirty bag water and my loaches won't get ich. Fish rarely get ich if they are not weakened by water quality issues.

My dempsey never gets sick, but my oscar gets fungus about once a month, too, and I keep my tank well maintained. Some are just weaker than others, and others could withstand a nuclear blast. I agree with no goldfish, also. Nasty fish they are. I usually use guppies and rosie reds that have been treated before releasing them to their doom.

One thing I found to be very affect is having medication on hand. I have several test kit’s I use once a week min. There is no feeling in the world then to look at your fish, know there is something wrong then being able to treat the illness with in sec’s. But overall I agree with you guys there is not better treatment then preventive treatment. And over filtration and weekly water changes are part of PT.
