Why Is It So Taboo For Someone Telling How Much They Bought A Fish For.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For me it has always been simple. It is no ones buisness what I pay for the things I have. Where fish are concerned I tend tward the rarer stuff, whether it's big money or not. I do not tend to say what I have paid for somthing. I dont want to sound rude, but what does it matter if I paid $1, or $1500? I have bought fish on either end of the spectrum, and it has never mattered. The fish is in my tank, you can't have the exact fish I have. Now if I do decide to sell a few, then you'll know generaly what I paid as I state that in my FS thread. I dunno.

I have no problem disclosing what I paid for equipment, live stock, or whatever. Its not like your salary, credit rating, or any deep secret.

People are going to flame on you either way. Either you paid way too much, not enough so you fish are low grade, etc.

I agree with the other posters about honesty. I call shenanigans on a lot of the figures I see floating around the treads.

Some of the price questions are just curiousity..what is wrong with that? Isn't this a community of hobbyist helping other hobbyist?

Thanks for sharing...see sharing a the price for a certain fish sparks conversation and interests from other members. Its all about the hobby and the brotherhood. When ever I see a members cool rare fish, I always get curious of how much a fine animal like that would cost. Just curious, not to try to hate or create malicious intent.
I have always wanted to know what a true platinum silver aro cost, or like a true platinum gar cost, or one of those super gold crossback asian arowanas Koji is always showing us. Lets see someone post a price about those fishes...It'n not gonna happen. Now I hope everyone knows why I posted the original topic about its taboo to post prices of these rare fishes.

In this case, I'd say that it makes sense to directly PM a vendor or two, and PM people who have them to see what they paid. The main thing is to explain that you're curious about the price so that you can determine if you're willing to drop some money on getting one, too. Some people still may not give you a price, but inevitably someone else will.

..... Take a look at ArapaimaG's 50,000 gallon tank thread, theres a price question every two pages, which he politely ignores yet people keep asking.

I feel that if people want to share their costs they will do so voluntarily and being hounded about it is as rude as asking for topless wife pics.

Here is the OP's bottom line "Bottom line is I just wish more people would just be more open and share what they paid for a certain new fish in their collection. The subject is always tip toed around with.". He is not suggesting making it mandatory to disclose what you paid for a fish; he is only expressing a wish that more people would share the information. Now why was that such a bad topic for you to request the Mods close it? Are you not imposing your own set of mandatory topics that should not be discussed on this forum?

Well artty i see the whole picture & i can agree with both sides"keeping secrets","or blunt honest"well the way i look at it is if they dont want to share it fine, atleast tell me that its something that you wish not to talk about, either then not saying nothing or ignoring you,hei some courtisy, goes a long way & is alway appreciated!!...By some....but it's always good for other this 007 secret, for future purchases or knowlegde to help others....but alot of people like to citicize & jugde..put people down..wow you paid what ...what a rip off!!!!But either way if your like artty & i,that will tell you,not for bragging...but for honestly not thinking this would go sour..im here for friendly, learning, experiences, for love of the hobby of keeping fish & reptile & rays things you dont see at your average smoes house!!!Chew me up n spit me if you all want to,not every one has the same heart the same set of thinking this is what makes us ..us..."Ourselfs as indiviguals"....but in others hands nice post arttyfish..you inspire me here & on Aw...with your awesome work, love & dedication for the hobby..it's a shame this might be getting closed..You can see ... the black the gray & the white....I see the picture & will stay to myself,my humble self.................."Do not wish to talk about this please"......Isnt that nicer,then...................................................nada...

I think Oscarum monstruoso's response was a very clever way to take the thread off-track. OM's original request was for the moderator to close the thread.

Now I can understand if a poster (requesting a thread to be closed) was a major seller of fish and wanted to protect his profit margin and didn't want people to post competitive pricing. Unfortunately, censoring a discussion to benefit a small group of people with special interest reminds me of the tactics Egypt's ruling class used when they shut off the internet.

I recently benefited from a similar forum thread when I was agonizing over the $1,100 price for a bird I was interested in. In one of the forum threads there was a discussion on the topic of over-the-top prices for birds. Someone poster a link for a rescue service that had an over abundance of the particular species I was looking to buy. A week later I had two perfectly healthy and social birds and only paid a rescue fee of $100 each.

I would have been very upset if the owner of the mega-bird store that sells a large percentage of the birds in the US (posing as an ordinary forum member), for fear of losing out to the rescue service, asked the mods to close that thread.

This is exactly why i would ask someone what they paid for their pet.. and why I would answer someone elses askance. and already stated.. price doesn't always mean your getting the best product if you will.. alot of people I htink would be amazed that haven't worked in the industry at the general LFS's mark-up on livestock. let alone when you start ventureing into exotics.

If you really wanted to know It may be best to Pm them since to some people It may be personal.

Lots of odd back and fourth in this thread. [shifty eyes]

I do not like to post prices for two simple reasons, 1) is resale. I rarely change stock but I may decide to sell or give away fish down the road and don't care to have my purchase price compared to my selling price or negotiate for that matter. 2) A price to me may be laughable by some or a small fortune to others. I don't care to have people question/assume my finicial postion based on a fish or how badly I wanted it, thus willing to pay higher prices.. I also do not like to discuss source or F.. generation liniage unless I am selling said fish.

Fair enough but my point is if its ok for them to inquire about personal finances then its ok to inquire about their private matters as well. If anyone wants to know what prices I pay for my goods, they would have to show me a topless wife picture first. Its only fair, tit for tat.
